STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC has signed defender Jake Dengler to its 2022 USL League One roster on a one-year contract with an option, pending league and federation approval.
Standing at 6-foot-5, Dengler joins Tormenta FC after dominating the Maryland Bobcats FC backline in 2021. Named Most Valuable Player, the 23-year-old started in 23 matches for Maryland and played a total of 2,051 minutes.
“Jake joins Tormenta with not only valuable soccer experience but also a lot of life experiences that he can draw upon to blossom into a top professional soccer player,” Head Coach Ian Cameron commented. “The tools are all there for him to have a long career. The next two seasons with us will hopefully see him cement himself in the professional landscape.
“The opportunity for Tormenta to have an indelible mark on his career is matched by the potential for Jake to leave an indelible mark on our Tormenta tapestry. We’re excited to get going with him.”
Dengler played for The University of Connecticut in 2019 where he started all 17 matches, scoring two goals and recording two assists.
The Baltimore native began his collegiate career in 2017 at CCBC Essex in Baltimore Maryland, finishing second on the team with 11 goals in 20 matches. Dengler then transferred to Loyola University Maryland for the 2018 season where he started all 16 matches for the Greyhounds and scored two goals, earning a selection to the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region Second Team.
“From my first contact with Tormenta FC, I knew this was the club to further develop myself as a professional footballer,” Dengler said. “Simply just talking to the gaffers and to the Van Tassells helped me understand what Tormenta as a club is all about.
“I’m excited about all the possibilities this season, and hopefully, we can bring the first League One trophy to Statesboro. Tormenta will be getting everything out of me that I have for the next two years. I’ve seen how quickly the game can be taken away, and I will be taking advantage of every opportunity I have to step on the field in a Tormenta kit.”
Dengler joins a growing roster of seven returners ready for a championship run, with the added power of Tormenta FC 2 midfielder Gabriel Cabral. With player signings, kit reveals and more expected in the coming weeks, fans should download the Tormenta FC app or follow the club on social media to stay up to date.
“The state of Maryland’s commitment to growing the beautiful game has given players like Jake Dengler an opportunity to develop and grow as a footballer and a person,” TFC Co-Owner and President Darin Van Tassell said. “Dengler’s time with the Maryland Bobcats, the Baltimore Blast and Christos FC shows how important these organizations’ commitment to growing the game and having homegrown talent develop and shine right in their own backyard. Tormenta is honored to build on the work those proud organizations have already done.”
Tormenta FC looks forward to welcoming supporters to its new 5,300-seat stadium set to open its doors in 2022. Supporters can now purchase season tickets in advance to guarantee their spot at every home match, available with 12-month payment plans. For families and new fans, the club also offers Flex Ticket packages which include ten General Admission or VIP tickets redeemable at any regular-season home match.
