Last summer, South Georgia Tormenta FC was one of the hottest teams in the Premier Development League for a full month but missed out on the postseason due to a sluggish start.
Tormenta is currently trying to keep history from repeating itself.
The second-year franchise has been impressive in all three of its showings and has racked up five goals in that span — as opposed to a four-match scoreless streak to begin 2016 — but Tormenta has only an 0-1-2 record to show for its trouble nearly a month into the season.
Tonight, Tormenta returns home for an 8 p.m. kickoff against the SC United Bantams. The Bantams are one of three rivals returning to Tormenta’s schedule from last season. SC United has played just two matches so far this season, claiming a 1-0 win over Tri-Cities while falling 2-0 to Nashville SC.
The season is still young, but Tormenta knows that the results have to get better if any postseason appearance is in the cards.
“There’s a lot of soccer to play, but we’re very much wanting that first win,” Tormenta coach John Miglarese said following his side’s loss to Nashville SC on May 20. “There have been games where we could have had a better result, but there are also plenty of spots where we need to improve.”
Tormenta is hoping to have made some of those improvements in the 11 days since they last took the field. Some extra practice time might help to improve Tormenta’s in-game approach, but they’ll need to find their best play in a hurry. Following SC United’s visit tonight, division-leading Nashville comes to town for a pair of matches next week. Those games will carry Tormenta to nearly the halfway mark of the season, so it’s time to start racking up points sooner rather than later.
