As South Georgia Tormenta FC prepares to enter its first season in the USL Division III, the franchise is growing to include new faces on and off the field. One of these new faces is Ian Cameron, Men’s Soccer Head Coach at Eckerd College, who has been named Head Coach for the Tormenta FC PDL team.
Cameron, a native of Glasgow, Scotland has coached for three years at Eckerd and will continue to coach there when not with Tormenta. Cameron brought many victories to the Eckerd men’s team and is ready to continue that success with Tormenta FC.
Vice President of Player Development and USL DIII Head Coach John Miglarese said “In searching for our next PDL coach we wanted to secure someone who is highly competent, motivated, and ambitious. Ian Cameron is just that. I am looking forward to working with him and watching him take our PDL team to new heights.”
Before Eckerd College, Cameron was Assistant Coach for the NCAA Division I Mercer University Men’s Soccer team for three years. His coaching and recruitment led the team to win Mercer’s first Southern Conference Championship. During his time at Mercer, Cameron also worked with the Macon Soccer Club.
Cameron studied finance and economics at Mercer University while also playing for Mercer’s soccer team from 2007-2010 as a midfielder. Coach Cameron received several NSCAA All-Region and Atlantic Sun All-Conference honors and continues to hold records for points, goals, and assists in the soccer program’s top 10 rankings.
Cameron holds two master’s degrees in Quantitative Finance and Business Administration from Mercer University and the University of Glasgow.
“I’m humbled to be given the opportunity to join the Tormenta family,” Cameron said. “Tormenta’s PDL team has gone from strength-to-strength under the stewardship of John Miglarese and Ben Freakley. It will be a privilege for me to carry that baton forward as we look to cultivate some of the best young talent in the country for future professional success on and off the field. Darin and Netra Van Tassell have built a club, where their values shine through in every aspect of the organization. Their enthusiasm for Tormenta is infectious, and I can’t wait to get started.”
After winning the PDL Deep South Division Championship in 2018, the team now will join the USL Division III as the first founding member of this league, making Tormenta FC the first professional sport to come to Statesboro. Tormenta FC will continue its PDL team in addition to its USL Division III team.
