Tormenta FC Signs Australian Goalie Mitch Thorn to League One Team
South Georgia Tormenta FC has signed a third goalie to its 2019 USL League One team, Mitch Thorn, pending league and federation approval. At 6’2” and 185 pounds, Thorn hails from Brisbane, Australia and spent his last season with Logan Lightning FC in the Football Queensland Premier League. The goalie was picked up at Tormenta FC’s first open trial in December.
“Mitch really stood out at our first open trial as a player who belongs in USL League One,” head coach John Miglarese said.
“He has a great frame, strong technique and a wonderful appetite for the game,” Miglarese said. “Really happy he is with us.”
Thorn graduated from the Florida Institute of Technology in 2016 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemical Engineering. While playing for the Panthers, he ranked third in Sunshine State Conference for goals-against average in 2015 and third for save percentage in 2014. The goalie appeared on the All-Sunshine State Conference II team in both 2014 and 2015. He also was named SSC Defensive Player of the Week his senior year.
In the National Premier League, Thorn played for both Logan Lightning FC in 2018 and the Brisbane Strikers FC in 2017. The Brisbane Strikers were finalists in the National NPL Finals that year. While in the states, he played in the net for Orlando City U23 in 2015 and Thunder Bay Chill in 2014, both in the USL PDL.
“It’s an exciting feeling to be part of this groundbreaking journey here in Statesboro with Tormenta FC,” Thorn said.
“The addition of USL League One to professional soccer in the States is giving opportunities for players like myself to live their dream. It’s a great feeling to know you have the full support of the club, and I am looking forward to working hard with my teammates and John Miglarese to bring success to Tormenta FC.”
