Tormenta FC 2 Announces Four Players Signings Ahead of US Open Cup
With Round One of the US Open Cup a week away, Tormenta FC 2 prepares for its first match with four more player signings. Tormenta 2 has signed forward James Meehan, midfielder Fortià Munts, and defenders Kareve Richards and Daniel Strachan to its 2019 USL League Two team, pending league and federation approval.
At six-foot four and 180 pounds, striker James Meehan attended Calumet College of St. Joseph his freshman year and was named to the CCAC All-Conference First Team. He currently attends Florida Southern College and will graduate in 2021, where he appeared on the SSC All-Conference Second Team and the All-Region Second Team this year. Growing up in England, Meehan played for Southend United FC Centre of Excellence Academy. “I am excited to spend my first summer out in America playing for Tormenta FC,” Meehan said. “I understand we have a very strong side, and I am looking forward to improving my game with the team and having an amazing season in Georgia.”
“James is a classic striker who enjoys running the line and scoring goals,” Head Coach Ian Cameron said. “He was pivotal to Florida Southern’s success this past year, and he’s very hard to defend. He is eager to improve and we believe he has a big future.”
Fortià Munts is an attacking midfielder from Barcelona who attends Virginia Commonwealth University, graduating in Fall 2019 with an International Relations degree. In Barcelona, Munts played for the RCD Espanyol U17, U18 and U19 teams. He also appeared on the Catalan National U16 and U18 teams. “I chose Tormenta FC 2 because it is a great organization, and I want to experience a more professional environment,” Munts said. “I’m very excited to get the season started and accomplish our goals.”
“Fortia has a really strong technical foundation and can play multiple positions in midfield,” Cameron said. “Our assistant coach Tom Morris worked with him last year at Lionsbridge, and he fits our model both on and off the field.”
Canadian defender Kareve Richards played for Atlanta United’s U19 team in its inaugural year. He attends Mercer University and helped the men’s soccer team there win the Southern Conference Tournament and Southern Conference Regular Season Championship in consecutive years. The defender made the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team in 2017 and the Southern Conference First Team in 2018. “Tormenta is a team that plays fantastic soccer and develops great players,” Richards said. “Hopefully this season I will gain a vast amount of experience playing at a higher level, and I believe Tormenta can help me do just that.”
“Kareve comes from Mercer where he has been a staple of their backline over the last few years,” Cameron said. “He is an athletic defender who reads the game well and can be employed both as a center back and a right back.”
Daniel Strachan is Tormenta 2’s second Akron signing this season. He started in the College Cup semifinals both his freshman and sophomore years, as well as the finals his sophomore year. In 2018, he made the All-Academic MAC Team. The defender also has experience with the Michigan Bucks League Two team. “I’m very happy to get started with Tormenta FC’s League Two team,” Strachan said. “The club is going through a lot of positive changes, including being one of the founding clubs in USL League One. Having the chance to help this organization continue to succeed is an exciting opportunity.”
“Daniel performed extremely well for Akron this last year, starting for the team that made a big impact at the College Cup,” Cameron said. “Daniel reads the game very well defensively and has the ability to control possession in the building phase.”
Other Tormenta 2 signees so far include Cadu Cusatis, JJ Donnelly, Luca Mayr, Juan Pablo Puelma, Zeron Sewell, Jordan Skelton, Curtis Thorn and Christian Lue Young.
Tormenta FC 2 will host League One team, Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, for Round One of the US Open Cup on May 7 at 8 pm in Erk Russell Park. The team’s first regular season match is four days later against Peachtree City MOBA on May 11 at home at 8 pm.
