Tormenta 2 Advances to Southern Conference Finals
Defeats Villages SC 3-1
Tormenta FC 2 advanced to the USL League Two Southern Conference Finals tonight for the first time in club history after a 3-1 win against Villages SC. The three goals were scored in the second half by Luca Mayr, JJ Donnelly and Adrian Billhardt.
The Villages played well and matched Tormenta’s possession through the first 35 minutes, but looked sluggish the rest of the match. With an above average age of 25, the Villages played wise tonight, but showed their age when they grew tired before the first half had ended.
The majority of the match was fought in the midfield where Craig McCall and Kobe Perez created opportunities and stopped the Villages’ chances before they began. The one chance that the opposing team got past Tormenta’s midfield and backline in the first half was blocked by goalkeeper Tor Saunders in the 40th minute.
The second half of the match proved to be more interesting with four goals scored between both teams and chippiness throughout. Luca Mayr scored first for Tormenta in the 56th minute off a ball from Curtis Thorn. In the 74th, a free kick from Mayr found JJ Donnelly who doubled the team’s lead. Adrian Billhardt then scored Tormenta’s third goal of the night off of Jordan Walshaw’s cross. The Villages scored a last-minute goal in the 89th, but it was too late to catch up.
Not only is this the first time in club history that Tormenta 2 made it to the conference finals, but the club was able to avenge its conference semi-final 1-0 loss to the Villages in 2018. On Sunday, July 21, Tormenta 2 will face the winner of SC United Bantams v. Brazos Valley Cavalry FC.
