Tormenta 2 Wins Southern Conference Finals 5-1
Advances to League Two Semi-Finals on Sunday, July 28
Defeats Highest Scoring Team in League Two
Tormenta FC 2 defeated Brazos Valley Cavalry tonight 5-1 and was named 2019 Southern Conference Champions. Tormenta 2 will now advance to the USL League Two Semi-Finals on Sunday, July 28 for the first time in club history.
“It has to be noted that Brazos were missing a lot of key pieces tonight, but we knew they were missing those pieces and took advantage of it” Head Coach Ian Cameron said. “They are a very good team, and they played some of the best soccer I’ve seen across USL League Two. I have to give amazing credit to our boys. We started the match way better than they did, with more intensity and more physicality. I’m more than proud of them.”
Tormenta came into the match prepared to press, and Jordan Walshaw opened up the scoring in the 3rd minute with an assist from English captain Jordan Skelton. In the 20th minute, Kobe Perez assisted Adrian Billhardt in the second goal of the night, bringing Tormenta’s lead to 2-0. Just five minutes after, Perez scored a goal of his own, a header assisted by Luca Mayr. Brazos Valley’s Dom Faletto stole away Tormenta’s clean sheet in the 43rd making the score 3-1.
Throughout the first half, Tormenta’s defense limited the opposing team’s chances, only allowing two shots. Meanwhile, Tormenta’s offense ended halftime leading 3-1 against the highest scoring team in USL League Two.
In the 55th, Brazos won a penalty on the spot, but Tormenta goalkeeper Tor Saunders made a class save. In the 69th, Chris Lue Young gave Tormenta a 4-1 lead with a chip to the keeper. Adrian Billhardt then scored goal number five, making this match the highest scoring game yet for Tormenta this season.
In the 84th minute, Tormenta backup goalkeeper Connor Gavigan was forced to sub in for midfielder Craig McCall due to an injury.
Tormenta 2 now advances to the USL League Two Semi-Finals on Sunday, July 28 to play Reading United AC who defeated Western Mass Pioneers tonight 1-0.
