ORLANDO, Fla. – Despite taking a lead into halftime, South Georgia Tormenta FC played to a 1-1 draw with Orlando City B on Friday night at Osceola Heritage Park.
Alongside Orlando, Tormenta FC players and staff continued to push for social change in silent solidarity for the first seven minutes of Friday night’s match. Tormenta FC continues to ask Tormenta Nation to fight for racial inequality everywhere.
Tormenta FC put the pressure on Orlando throughout the first 45 minutes, with Pato Botello-Faz and Devyn Jambga each having a chance to put the visiting side in front. However, in the 29th minute, Orlando goalkeeper Austin Aviza mishandled the ball and scored an own goal, putting Tormenta up 1-0.
Following the break and in an unfortunate turn of events, Tormenta FC gave up a penalty in the 61st minute due to a handball in the box by Josh Phelps, leading to the tying goal being scored by OCB. The yellow card was Phelps’ second of the match, having already received one for a foul earlier in the match, giving him a red, and Tormenta FC was forced to play the rest of the match down a man.
Tormenta FC returns home to Erk Russell Park on Friday, Sept. 4, for a showdown with Greenville Triumph SC. The club advises fans to purchase tickets early as space will be limited due to COVID-19. A portion of each general admission ticket purchased will be donated to the Salvation Army to help people in need in Statesboro and the surrounding region.
