STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC hosted U17 players from around the region for its inaugural Girls Training Center Program in preparation for the 2021 USL Academy Cup during Memorial Day weekend. A successful event all around, the group showed high-quality talent and promise for the creation of a high-level Tormenta FC girls squad in the future.
“Here at Tormenta, we’ve seen quite a lot of talent on the girl's side in terms of going off to top collegiate programs, and we really have the opportunity to tap into that and keep our talented players here by offering them the USL Academy piece,” USL Academy Head Coach Nick Jaramillo said. “I think that separates us from all the other clubs in the area. We do have players that travel two-to-three hours, plus, and we want to offer that here, so that way they can stay right in their backyard.”
The girls kicked off the day with a message from Tormenta FC Co-Owner Netra Van Tassell about women in sports. After hitting the field to warm up, the squad participated in timed trials, with the results to be revealed in the coming days. In the first session, USL Academy coaches Jaramillo and Jordan Melia led the group in technical drills and small-sided games. In the second session, the groups faced off in an 11-v-11 match.
“I think it's important because we really need these types of opportunities,” midfielder Ashley Hampton said. “I know other people have opportunities like this in other states, but it's finally coming to our area. We don't have to drive a couple of hours to get this, so it's amazing to have something at this level close to home.”

Tormenta FC announced on Friday that its second Boys Training Center Program, originally scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6, was postponed due to incoming weather. The club will announce a rescheduled date as soon as possible.
“It’s super cool to have opportunities opening up like this,” goalkeeper Madison Hahn said. “The women’s game is getting a lot bigger and it's getting more popular. I’m excited to see more opportunities like this open up for players not only in this club and in this area but around the country.”
Tormenta FC was named a founding member of the USL Academy League’s Southeast Division in October. The inaugural season of Academy League play is due to kick off in spring 2021 and will provide clubs in all three of the USL's senior divisions (USL Championship, USL League One and USL League Two) with an elite youth development and competition platform.
