STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC made a passionate effort to come back tonight from Toronto FC II’s two-goal lead, but was beaten 1-2 at Erk Russell Park. Former Tormenta FC 2 standout Rodney Michael proved the path to pro is strong at this organization, making his debut start for the club and scoring his first professional goal to steal Toronto’s clean sheet.
Luca Mayr-Fälten worked hard tonight, recording two shots on target and capitalizing off of Toronto’s mistakes. The Austrian mastermind took several corners and a free kick in the 30th minute that went off target.
In the 37th minute, Mayr-Fälten claimed another corner kick that missed its mark, but the boys persisted to keep it inside the box, and Lars Eckenrode nearly scored Tormenta’s first goal of the night, but it was called offside. Azaad Liadi also nearly scored with a dangerous curler moments later, but Toronto’s keeper saved it with his fingertips.
Michael impressed the coaching staff tonight and earned the Man of the Match title, presented by Galactic Comics and Games. The Sierra Leone talent used his head to put Tormenta FC on the board in the 76th off a cross from Mayr-Fälten.
The Statesboro side turns around to host North Carolina FC for the first time this season on Saturday, July 3, at 8 p.m. ET in Erk Russell Park.
