STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC 2 travels to meet Asheville City SC for the first and last time this season, with eyes set on clinching a 2021 USL League Two playoff spot. The two sides kick off Friday, July 2 at 7:30 p.m. ET from Memorial Stadium.
Asheville comes into the match with a 3-5-2 record with two out of its three wins at home. Forward Jack Stainrod is Asheville’s lead goal-scorer, notching four out of the squad’s total nine goals in 10 matches. TFC 2 has scored 16 goals in 11 matches and is led by Gabriel Rodriguez and Alexis Ledoux who have recorded five goals each. Defender Michael Hornsby leads the team in assists with five and continues to create scoring opportunities from the back line.
On Tuesday, Tormenta FC 2 played its final regular season home schedule and claimed a 2-0 win against Charlotte Independence 2. Defender Mo Redjeb and forward Jacob Evans scored to avenge the team’s road loss to Independence 2 on May 19.
A win or tie on Friday evening would clinch a playoff spot for TFC 2. The winner of the Deep South Division, meanwhile, has not yet been decided yet, as a few losses from the SC United Bantams would give Tormenta FC 2 a chance to steal first place.
If Tormenta FC 2 advances to the playoffs, it will be the team’s third playoff run after claiming the Deep South Division in both 2018 and 2019 and being crowned Southern Conference champions in 2019. After a year without USL League Two play, the club is excited for the prospect of fighting for the trophy once again.
While the club’s second team fights for a playoff spot, the USL League One squad will host North Carolina FC this Saturday, July 3, at 8 p.m. ET in Erk Russell Park. This Saturday is Community Heroes Night, and Tormenta FC is offering free admittance to the match for all first responders with ID. Fans should purchase their tickets, including half-season plans or quarter-season plans, in advance.
