STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC travels to Gillette Stadium to face New England Revolution II on Sunday, Sept. 5, at 7:00 p.m. ET for the second and final time this season. Tormenta will look to bounce back and stay right in the heart of a tight USL League One playoff race, that currently has one point separating third and eleventh place.
The two teams currently sit outside of a playoff position, so Sunday’s match is crucial for both squad’s playoff hopes. In its last match on August 28, Tormenta FC fell to Fort Lauderdale CF 4-2, a match that was frustrating to players and fans, but Azaad Liadi shined late in the match substituting on and recording Tormenta’s first brace of the 2021 season with goals in the 83rd and 90th minute.
Tormenta FC and New England Revolution II met previously on August 21 at Erk Russell Park in Statesboro. South Georgia fought hard against a New England side that consisted of several players with MLS experience and grinded out a 1-1 draw thanks to a 72nd minute equalizer by Austrian midfielder, Luca Mayr-Fälten. The August 21 matchup saw Tormenta create more chances, take more shots on goal, and lead in the majority of offensive stats across the 90 minute match. Tormenta will hope to capitalize on their chances in the rematch and bring all three points back to Statesboro.

Sunday’s match will be New England’s second match in five days. The Massachusetts side faced off with FC Tucson on Wednesday night in Foxborough, falling 2-1. This quick turnaround will likely play a large role in squad selection and player rotation for Revolution II.
Tormenta FC and New England come into the match mirroring each other statistically and in table position. New England sits in eighth in the table, with Tormenta right behind them in ninth. Both squads have 24 points and seven wins. Through their last six matches, both teams have a record of 2-2-2. Sunday’s match will go a long way in straightening out the compact USL League One table with less than two months left in the season.
