STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC has announced the signing of Belizean defender Deshawon Nembhard to its 2022 USL League One roster on a one-year deal, pending league and federation approval.
Nembhard received his first Belizean Men’s National Team call-up in March 2021. The defender scored a goal for Belize in a World Cup qualifier match against Turks-Caicos in a 5-0 win and has also played a full 90 minutes against both Haiti and Nicaragua.
“Deshawon has qualities we knew we wanted to add,” TFC Head Coach Ian Cameron said. “His versatility as a left-sided defender allows us to employ him in different ways. He’s also taken the hard route professionally and remains committed to fulfilling his potential.
“That story we like, that hunger to succeed we want to cultivate. Preseason will allow us to learn more about him and fit him into how we like to play. I’m confident he’ll have an important role this season.”
Nembhard comes to Tormenta FC after a 2021 season with Stumptown AC where he was a crucial member of the club in its inaugural professional season. The versatile left-back played 1,620 minutes in 18 games, scoring two goals from the backline.
In Sept. 2021, Nembhard helped Stumptown become the only team to beat Detroit City FC that year, breaking the team’s 362-day unbeaten streak. The left-back broke the drawless tie in the 79th minute with a curled pass and mid-air strike past the Detroit City goalkeeper to win the match.
Nembhard also previously played in the USL Championship with Charleston Battery and in USL League Two with FC Miami City.
“I’m excited to be a part of the team and face new challenges individually and collectively,” Nembhard commented. “Tormenta is the right fit for me because the club’s vision, direction and ambition match my own. Nothing in this game is guaranteed, except for the promise to give everything for the club and the city day in and day out.”
Nembhard joins a growing roster of returners ready for a championship run, with the added defensive power of Ian Antley and Jake Dengler. Additional player signings, kit reveals and more are expected in the coming weeks, so fans should download the Tormenta FC app or follow the club on social media to stay up to date.
Tormenta FC looks forward to welcoming supporters to its new 5,300-seat stadium set to open its doors in 2022. Supporters can now purchase season tickets in advance to guarantee their spot at every home match, available with 12-month payment plans. For families and new fans, the club also offers Flex Ticket packages which include ten General Admission or VIP tickets redeemable at any regular-season home match.
