STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC continues preparation for the 2022 USL League One season and travels to Marietta, Georgia, this Saturday, Feb. 26, to face USL Championship-side Atlanta United II in a closed-door friendly.
“As a coaching staff, preseason helps us get the little pieces polished, playing a college side and the following week playing a championship side offers us a different test,” League One Assistant Coach Tom Morris commented. “The game will help us prepare different parts of our game, deep defending counter-attacks, etc. Our different preseason opponents will help us prepare for the 28 USL League One games this season.”
A second fixture between the sides, Tormenta FC first met Atlanta United 2 in 2019 ahead of its inaugural USL League One season. Previously, Tormenta FC also faced Atlanta United’s first team in 2021 and was able to hold the Major League Soccer side scoreless for over 45 minutes.
“Our game against ATL UTD 2 will help us develop our understanding with each other,” TFC midfielder Kingsford Adjei said. “We have a lot of new players that have done a good job trying to understand each other’s strengths and playing the way the gaffer wants us to play.”
Fans will be able to watch the preseason friendly for free, through Atlanta United’s Twitch channel.
“Moving into eleven-a-side games against USL Championship teams are always great because all of a sudden things get a bit more uncomfortable, and competition for a place in the starting eleven starts to creep in and that is when the cream really rises to the top,” TFC defender Lars Eckenrode commented. “I am excited for the competition between us, as it will help us progress forward and it is what ultimately will drive us to a championship.”
The club looks forward to opening its new 5,300-seat soccer stadium in Statesboro, Georgia, during the 2022 season with more details to be announced this Spring. Supporters should purchase ticket packages in advance to secure their spot in the new stadium and cheer on Tormenta FC across USL League One, League Two and W League.
