STATESBORO, Ga. – As South Georgia Tormenta FC nears the end of its 2022 preseason, the USL League One side will host Mercer University at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 20, from Erk Russell Park ahead of the April 2 home opener.
“Sunday’s game is a nice matchup as Mercer will be one of the college teams that, physically, provide a USL League One level,” Head Coach Ian Cameron commented. “Their speed and aggression in transition is nationally known and respected and has been a pillar upon which their multiple NCAA appearances sit.
“In the run-up to the Rowdies game a few weeks ago, we naturally placed a higher premium on our work against the ball. Vice-versa, on Sunday, we anticipate being with the ball for longer periods of time, hence the attacking combination play takes greater priority during training. We will phase teams at home who will sit deep and counter with pace, again a challenge Brad’s team at Mercer will do at an elite level.”
With two preseason friendlies remaining, Tormenta FC is gearing up to start the 2022 season the best way possible, and Sunday’s friendly will help the team test its abilities and tactics. The game will also serve as a test to the remaining trialists and help them impress the coaching staff.
“Our friendly on Sunday will be a brilliant test, we are looking to set the pieces and try to achieve our gaffer’s vision,” Tormenta FC Goalkeeper Pablo Jara commented. “In preseason, it is way more important to get our tactics right and continue to build chemistry, but we also want to win every game we play.”
The Mercer Bears come into Sunday’s friendly after finishing their 2021 season with a 10-8-1 record and now aspire for another winning season in 2022. Mercer looks to run it back and win the Southern Conference once again, and make a run in the NCAA Championship next season.
Tormenta FC is excited for a historic 2022 as it transitions from Erk Russell Park to Tormenta Stadium. Supporters can now purchase season memberships in advance to guarantee their spot at every home match, available with 12-month payment plans. The club also offers Flex Ticket packages which include ten General Admission or Storm Zone 1 (VIP) tickets redeemable at any regular-season home match.
