STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC has announced the return of forward Alex Morrell to its 2022 USL League One roster on a one-year deal, pending league and federation approval.
In March 2019, Morrell secured his spot in the Tormenta FC history books by scoring USL League One’s first-ever goal as a part of the club’s inaugural professional season. In his first stint with the club, Morrell appeared in 27 matches, logging four goals and three assists.
“We’re excited for our fans and community to bring Alex back here to Tormenta,” Tormenta FC Head Coach Ian Cameron commented. “On the field, he provides variety and speed to our attack. The lad has really good quality, and in our structure, we anticipate he can provide his highest numbers yet in terms of goals and assists during 2022.
“With Alex also comes that added bonus of a guy who has fought for championships and played in the elite USL League One post-season games. His experience on that front will be paramount to our young group.”
Morrell returns to Tormenta FC after two years with Greenville Triumph SC where he helped the Triumph obtain its first USL League One title in 2020. Morrell played 37 games for Greenville, providing five goals and seven assists.
In 2016, the veteran was selected 22nd overall in the MLS SuperDraft by the Chicago Fire and appeared four times for the MLS side; Morrell was then loaned out to St. Louis FC of the USL Championship for the remainder of the season. There, he appeared 35 times, netting three goals and three assists in two seasons.
“Tormenta is a very unique and one-of-a-kind place to play, the culture for me is unmatched,” Morrell commented. “I couldn’t be happier to come back and play for this club. I will give everything I have to offer in order to make the team better and push us to make the playoffs so we have a chance to win a championship.”
A University of North Florida grad, Morrell left his mark on the program with 10 career goals, 19 assists and 39 career points. The Florida native was a three-time Atlantic Sun All-Conference selection and became the first player to be drafted from the University of North Florida.
Morrell joins a growing roster of returners ready for a championship run, with the added firepower of recent signings Kazaiah Sterling, Arthur Bosua and Tobias Otieno. Additional player announcements, kit reveals and more are expected in the near future, so fans should download the Tormenta FC app or follow the club on social media to stay up to date.
