STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC returns home this Saturday, April 16, to take on defending USL League One champion Union Omaha at Erk Russell Park at 7:30 p.m. ET. Tormenta FC seeks its first regular-season win after upsetting the Charleston Battery last Wednesday in the second round of the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup.
“After a really strong win for our team in the U.S. Open Cup, it is always good to have another amazing challenge. You look at the teams we have faced this year and see they play big games every week. Players want to play these games week in and week out. We have the reigning USL League One champions coming to town this weekend, and that is exactly who we want to face. We want to put an early mark with them and see where we stand in the league. Saturday will be a good challenge for us.”
Ian Cameron, Tormenta FC Head Coach
The season opener did not go as expected for Tormenta FC, however, the team took the result as a learning opportunity. With 14 shots to North Carolina’s four shots and 72 percent of the possession to Tormenta FC, the team felt the result came a bit short.
Tormenta FC began its 2022 Open Cup journey in Charleston, South Carolina, last Thursday, April 7, against USL Championship’s Charleston Battery. The Statesboro side made it known from kickoff that they were there to win. A header goal from former Battery forward Arthur Bosua sealed Tormenta FC’s ticket to the third round of the Open Cup for the first time in club history. The win also signified the first Open Cup win in professional club history.
“The Open Cup game was a great win, but we have moved on,” TFC defender Deshawon Nembhard said. “Union Omaha is a very tough opponent; the more challenging opponents we play, the better of a team we can be. Saturday is a big test of our physical, mental and emotional abilities. Three games next week in seven days is not easy but as professional soccer players, these are challenges we want.”
The reigning League One champions debuted in the U.S. Open Cup with a 2-1 win at home against USL League Two champions Des Moines Menace. Last Saturday, Omaha opened its 2022 campaign in a 2-2 draw with fellow foes Forward Madison with goals scored by midfielders Hugo Kametani and John Scearce.
