STATESBORO, Ga. — South Georgia Tormenta FC’s historic 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup run continues on Tuesday, May 10, at 8 p.m. ET, versus Inter Miami CF. After two wins against USL Championship teams, South Georgia now enters the Fourth Round to take on its first-ever Major League Soccer side, aiming to continue its winning ways in the national tournament.
“We left Saturday’s game pretty disappointed as we thought we did enough to get the three points,” Tormenta FC Head Coach Ian Cameron commented. “Tuesday’s game is a new challenge for us as a unit.”
“We go against a team that is better than us; we go against a team that has more money, more resources and more players. However, we have a team that we trust can upset any team in the United States. It will be a game that our fans can be proud of how well this team represents South Georgia.”
Ian Cameron, Tormenta FC Head Coach
South Georgia traveled on Monday to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after a 0-0 draw in USL League One play against the Charlotte Independence, one of the best offenses in the league. Although not the expected result for Ian Cameron and his team, the draw helped maintain Tormenta FC’s second-place position in the League One table. Tormenta FC has now accumulated six consecutive clean sheets across all competitions, the highest across League One this season.
Tormenta FC is not ready to bow out of the U.S. Open Cup just yet; Inter Miami CF will be a test, especially at DRV PNK Stadium, but South Georgia has a united connection and aspires to be the last USL League One team remaining in the 2022 U.S. Open Cup.
“We are really looking forward to testing ourselves against an MLS side. Hopefully we can continue the great momentum we have going on thus far. If anyone can cause a cupset this round in our league, it is us.”
Curtis Thorn, Tormenta FC Defender
Inter Miami CF kicked off its second season in Major League Soccer in February and currently sits 13th in the Eastern Conference after a 0-1 defeat at Charlotte FC. Inter Miami made its U.S Open Cup debut in the second round of the competition with a 1-0 win over the Miami FC.
Notably, Inter Miami’s newly-signed Indiana Vassilev started his path to pro with Tormenta FC Academy in 2013. Vassilev excelled for two years with Tormenta FC before settling at IMG Academy. Vassilev is one of many Tormenta FC Academy players who have found success in the professional soccer world. Although Vassilev never debuted professionally for Tormenta FC, Tuesday’s fixture could see him face his former Academy club.
Tormenta FC entered play in the 2022 U.S. Open Cup on April 7 in a Lowcountry clash against USL Championship-side, the Charleston Battery. Arthur Bosua’s lone goal in the 65th minute sealed the 1-0 win for Tormenta FC, clinching its first Open Cup win in club history. Then in a rigid Birmingham Legion environment on April 19, Tormenta FC capped an impressive team performance off with a win that signified its entrance into the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup.
In its 107th edition, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup – U.S. Soccer’s National Championship – has crowned a champion since 1914 every year except in 2020 and 2021. The history-filled tournament is conducted on a single-game-knockout basis and is open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. In 1999, the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
