STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC stepped into a physical environment tonight and took a valuable point from Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC, handing them their second consecutive draw at home since joining USL League One. A goal from Kingsford Adjei saw South Georgia lead till the last play to continue Tormenta FC’s unbeaten run on the road in 2022.
A slow start to the game found both teams battling it out through the midfield. A rigid 30 minutes saw neither team put a shot on target or intimidate any goalkeeper.
36 minutes into the game, a penalty was called for Northern Colorado after a foul inside the area. “El Capi” Pablo Jara knew a save would keep his team in this match. In the first penalty of the year, Jara stepped up to the occasion; a saved penalty kick from Jara helped the team remain equal throughout the first half.
In the 54th minute, an over-the-top ball from Adrian Billhardt found Kingsford Adjei who beat the defensive line through space. After beating the goalkeeper, Adjei was able to simply finesse the ball into the back of a lone goal.
South Georgia remained the better side for the remainder of the second half; with little to null opportunities for the Hailstorm, Tormenta FC was able to hold onto the one-goal lead for almost all of the half, continuing its undefeated streak when visiting teams.
In a final hail mary opportunity for the Hailstorm, Northern Colorado obtained a corner kick in the 98th minute, one minute past the end of official stoppage time. After several rebounds, Northern Colorado’s Nortei Nortey’s shot was enough to get the goal that helped equalize the encounter.
Following the conclusion of the game, Head Coach Ian Cameron was shown a red card. Cameron will be unable to coach in next week’s match against Forward Madison FC.
Joshua Phelps reached the 100th game milestone for Tormenta FC, throughout all teams and competitions including South Georgia Tormenta FC and South Georgia Tormenta FC 2.
