STATESBORO, Ga. – In an intense and overwhelming performance, South Georgia Tormenta FC battled to a 2-2 draw at home against Forward Madison FC. South Georgia was able to get its first and second home goals of the season coming from defender Jake Dengler early in the first half and Kingsford Adjei in the agonizing part of the second half.
South Georgia kicked things off in the 13th minute with the team’s first corner kick placed into the danger zone, hoping to find a clinical finish. A well-positioned Jake Dengler showed why he is the danger in aerial plays with a header to the left corner of the goal. Dengler’s goal was his first in USL League One, and his second for Tormenta FC in all competitions.
After several months, Tobias Otieno entered the match during the halftime break, marking his Tormenta FC debut.
After five scoreless home games for South Georgia, the goal smoke finally saw the light of day at Erk Russell Park; although the opportunity was the only shot on target for both of the teams in the first half, South Georgia was able to retain majority possession of the ball and limit opportunities for the visiting Madison side.
Ten minutes into the start of the second half, Madison was able to score the equalizer; after beating Jara, a cross was placed into the center of the box and deflected by a Tormenta FC defender. The deflection slid into the back of the net for a Mikey Maldonado equalizer.
Forward Madison were able to take the lead with a Rojay Smith goal following a slight deflection from a Tormenta FC defender leaving Pablo Jara with no opportunity to save the goal.
South Georgia’s commitment to rescuing a point at home was what got Tormenta FC’s equalizer. In the 86th minute, a central run from Kingsford Adjei saw him blasting the ball to the opposite side of the keeper’s net; Adjei got the equalizer and his third goal of the season.
Tonight’s Player of the Match presented by Galactic Comics and Games is Jake Dengler. Dengler understood the rhythm of the game and was where he was supposed to be during most set pieces in tonight’s match. Dengler got his first goal in USL League One and his second in all competitions.
