STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC has announced the four nominees for the Tormenta FC Player of the Month (USL League One) award for September, and as always, the community will help decide the winner. Forward Kazaiah Sterling, midfielders Mukwelle Akale and Gabriel Cabral and defender Joshua Phelps are all up for the award. Despite starting the month with a defeat on the road at Richmond, Tormenta FC was able to end the month with two wins and a draw to place the team near the top of the league.
Voting for the Tormenta FC Player of the Month (USL League One) award will run through Sunday, Oct. 7 at 11:59 p.m. ET, with daily voting. The winner will be determined via a weighted vote from the following three voting bodies:
- A fan vote (poll below) will comprise 60 percent of the poll.
- The Tormenta FC staff ballots will comprise 20 percent of the poll.
- Media ballots comprise 20 percent of the poll.
Voting results will be announced on Monday, Oct. 10.
Player of the Month Nominees:
Joshua Phelps, Defender: The South Georgia defender scored his first goal of the season in Tormenta FC’s win over Forward Madison on Sept. 24. That night, Phelps locked down to help South Georgia get its eighth clean sheet of the season.
Gabriel Cabral, Midfielder: Ever since obtaining the captain’s armband, Cabral has led South Georgia as a team to one of its best seasons to date – the first-year pro continues to light the pitch and is now nominated for Player of the Month for September.
Mukwelle Akale, Midfielder: Akale has taken South Georgia by storm, after being a late addition to Ian Cameron’s squad, Akale has proven to be a game changer throughout the month, scoring his first goal against FC Tucson and being a constant threat offensively allows him to create chances for others.
Kazaiah Sterling, Forward: Sterling breached the Tormenta FC record book in the month of September. Sterling recorded his first professional hat trick in Tormenta FC’s 3-1 win against Northern Colorado Hailstorm. Sterling became only the second player in club history to score a hat trick for the League One side.
