STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC has announced the four nominees for the month of October’s Tormenta FC Player of the Month (USL League One) award. The community will help decide the winner. Defenders Jake Dengler and Joshua Phelps, midfielder Gabriel Cabral and Forward Kazaiah Sterling are all up for the award. Tormenta FC’s historic month of October saw them remain unbeaten throughout the month. South Georgia also obtained its first two League One Playoff wins near the end of the month after obtaining a home win in the League One Quarterfinal against the Charlotte Independence and a road win at Greenville in the Semifinal. The offensive unit was able to step up its goal productivity withSterling leading the line near the end of the season and come playoff time. Cabral captained Tormenta FC to its first ever playoff appearance and led the team to the final where they face the Chattanooga Red Wolves SC in early November. Meanwhile, the defensive unit ended the month with two clean sheets, while only allowing three goals in five games.
Voting for the Tormenta FC Player of the Month (USL League One) award will run through Thursday, November 17 at 11:59 p.m. ET, with daily voting. The winner will be determined via a weighted vote from the following three voting bodies:
- A fan vote (poll below) will comprise 60 percent of the poll.
- The Tormenta FC staff ballots will comprise 20 percent of the poll.
- Media ballots comprise 20 percent of the poll.
Voting results will be announced on Friday, November 18.
Player of the Month Nominees:
Jake Dengler, Defender: Dengler’s defensive presence proved to be critical to the team’s success in October after helping South Georgia to its first ever USL League One playoff game. Dengler was recognized as one of the best players in League One after being named to the second team. Dengler helped the defensive unit secure two clean sheets and remained a dangerous aerial presence offensively.
Joshua Phelps, Defender: Phelps’ leadership in the backline helped the young team reach the League One playoffs and helped South Georgia to finish the month as one of the best teams in the league, and finish unbeaten in October.
Gabriel Cabral, Midfielder: Cabral suited up for every competitive Tormenta FC match in October and donned the captain’s armband to end the regular season. A constant motor throughout the Midfield, Cabral created multiple opportunities for the offense.
Kazaiah Sterling, Forward: With a club-record 13 regular-season goals, Sterling was responsible for four of the five postseason goals. Sterling scored the equalizer against Union Omaha on the road.
