STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC is set to kick off its highly anticipated home opener brought to you by Kids World this Saturday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. ET from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium with a mouth-watering fixture against the Charlotte Independence. Last year, the teams faced each other three times with each team obtaining a victory and one draw.
The defending champions are coming into the home opener after an impressive win last Friday against North Carolina FC. Mukwelle Akale scored Tormenta FC’s first goal of the season, securing the three points for Tormenta FC. Notably, South Georgia secured its first season opening win since 2019, which was Tormenta FC’s inaugural professional season.
Additionally, midfielders Akale, Tobias Otieno and John Murphy Jr. were named to the USL League One Team of the Week for Week One after stellar performances against North Carolina FC last Friday.
The defending League One champion will not have an easy match as the team faces a tough test against the Independence. Last season’s quarterfinal match between the two sides was a tense affair that was ultimately decided by a moment of brilliance from the defending champions. The Independence will undoubtedly be looking for revenge and will be keen to get a result on the road by taking down the reigning champions on the road.
Davey Mason, Preston Kilwien, Elijah Amo, Nick Akoto, Jackson Khoury, Pedro Fonseca, Murphy Jr., Matheus Cassini and Andrew Akindele all made their Tormenta FC debuts last Friday night but will look to debut at home in front of Tormenta FC fans tomorrow.
South Georgia is poised to make a strong push for the championship title in the upcoming season. Fans can secure their seats at the new Tormenta Stadium ahead of 2023, with Season Tickets now available for purchase.
Tormenta FC is set to remain at home for its second consecutive match as they host Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC next Saturday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m. ET from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium in Statesboro, Georgia.
