Tormenta FC hosts the opening round of Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC hosts FC America CFL Spurs at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 19, in the opening round of the 109th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Tormenta Stadium. The first-round match will feature USL League One side Tormenta FC and United States Soccer League (USSL) side FC America CFL Spurs.
FC America CFL Spurs beat three United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) sides to qualify for the 109th edition of the Open Cup. The Florida-based club clinched its place in the cup after defeating Leg-AZ World FC 4-1. Tuesday’s match will mark FC America’s first time competing in the Open Cup.
Tormenta FC will enter the Open Cup for the fifth time in the club’s history. Head Coach Ian Cameron holds a 4-3-0 record in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. In 2022, Cameron led South Georgia to the fourth round of the competition, defeating the Charleston Battery 0-1 and Birmingham Legion 0-2.
South Georgia’s youthful roster also carries experience in the Open Cup. Club captain Conor Doyle is a previous cup winner with D.C. United and made a quarterfinal run in 2022 with Union Omaha.
Founded in 2015, Tormenta FC is a professional soccer club based in Statesboro, Georgia. Tormenta FC competes in the professional USL League One and the pre-professional USL W League, under the United Soccer League (USL) and has also established a thriving academy system throughout South Georgia and the Lowcountry of South Carolina.
