Statesboro, Ga – April 2, 2024 – South Georgia Tormenta FC will take on the Savannah Clovers at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 3 at Tormenta Stadium in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Wednesday’s South Georgia Showdown will be the first time the two professional sides have faced each other.
Tormenta FC enters the historic matchup after defeating FC America CFL Spurs 1-0 on March 19 in the first round of The Cup, thanks to a header by Nick Akoto in the fifth minute. South Georgia most recently lost 1-0 on the road to One Knoxville SC. The team will look to rebound Wednesday with a victory against the Clovers.
The Savannah Clovers are coming off a 2-0 victory against Brave SC in its first-round match of the Open Cup and have yet to begin the NISA regular season. Its first regular season match is scheduled for April 6, 2024 when the Clovers travel to Michigan to face the Michigan Stars.
Head Coach Ian Cameron will look to top goal scorer Niall Watson to maintain the form he has shown this season to propel South Georgia to victory. Cameron will also be expecting his defensive unit to keep back-to-back Open Cup clean sheets in what is anticipated to be an intense matchup between two local rivals.
In order to keep Cameron’s desired clean sheet, the defense will need to minimize the impact from Clovers midfielder Vlad Jokic and forward Roddy Green, who scored a goal each against Brave SC on March 19.
