STATESBORO, Ga. – April 9, 2024 – South Georgia Tormenta FC’s Ford Parker, Jake Dengler, Pedro Fonseca, Gabriel Rodriguez, Nick Akoto, and Jackson Khoury have been named to the USL League One Team of the Week for week five. Head Coach Ian Cameron was named the Coach of the Week for the team’s 3-0 home victory. Parker, Dengler, Fonseca, and Rodriguez were named to the Team of the Week starting XI, while Akoto and Khoury made the bench.
Cameron was named the Coach of the Week for week five after South Georgia kept its first clean sheet of the USL League One regular season and found the back of the net on three occasions. This victory marked the team’s first home win of the 2024 season, a significant win as we look ahead to a month full of home matches.
South Georgia goalkeeper Parker kept his first clean sheet of the season, making one save on what was a relatively quiet night for the New Mexico native. Parker also won 100% of his duels and completed 80% of his passes.
Dengler was instrumental in keeping South Georgia’s clean sheet, completing five clearances, blocking two shots, and making one interception. In the 81st minute, Dengler proved to be a threat on set pieces when he used his head to redirect a Conor Doyle corner kick into the path of Sebastian Vivas, who found the back of the net.
Fonseca built on his Player of the Match performance from the prior match by winning and converting a penalty in the 26th minute. He also completed one clearance, made one tackle, and intercepted a Lexington pass.
Rodriguez scored the opening goal for South Georgia in the eighth minute following a low cross from Khoury. Rodriguez completed 83% of his passes against Lexington and won an aerial and ground duel.
Akoto made the week five bench, completing two clearances, making one tackle, and intercepting one pass. He also completed four aerial and four ground duels, making for a difficult night for Leington’s Isaac Cano. The Miami native completed 85% of his passes against Lexington, including one key pass.
Khoury assisted the opening goal of the night in the eighth minute after sending a Lexington defender sliding out of play. The assist was one of Khoury’s two goal-scoring chances created. The attacking-minded midfielder also contributed defensively with one clearance, two interceptions, and one tackle.
