Greensboro, NC – April 20, 2024 – A total of 48 U17 girls teams, representing 22 states, from Maine to Arizona to Hawaii, have converged at the Bryan Park Soccer Complex this weekend for the prestigious Girls Academy Spring Showcase in Brown’s Summit, North Carolina, with only one entrant from Georgia, that being Tormenta FC 07G DPL. But the girls made their presence felt early, downing New York’s Long Island SC 3-0 in Friday morning’s opener.
Keeper Kamryn Martinez punted from her 18’ box, and Tee Headman outraced the defender to gain control, going coast to coast like butter on toast, finishing by blasting the game’s opening goal from the left side into the lower right corner at the 12 minute mark.
Later in the first half, a counter-attack on a free kick sent Selena Duncan in for a breakaway, and the Beaufort resident’s shot was deflected by a defender, but Elena Kunert snagged the rebound and booted it top left to double the lead.
Kunert later approached the right side of the net, got by a defender, and crossed it to Headman, who, in her words, “volley-bicycled” to receive it, and then the Pooler native fired the ball over the keeper’s left shoulder for Tormenta FC’s third and final goal. The second half went scoreless.
Martinez, whose teammates claim she is the best keeper in Tormenta FC, made some solid saves, and Kunert and Satori Bell were praised for their strong defense.
Head Coach Jim Robbins was pleased with Tormenta FC’s “awesome play as a team”.
Game two will take place Saturday afternoon at 3:15pm against San Diego’s Albion SC.
