Recipe Review
Wednesday’s match will be the third time Charleston Battery and Tormenta FC meet on the pitch in the Open Cup. The last time the two sides faced each other was during South Georgia’s 2022 Open Cup Round of 32 run, which was the only time the club had reached this stage of the competition. South Georgia comes into the Round of 32 after winning three Open Cup matches, most recently defeating USL Championship side Miami FC 2-4. Charleston enters the Open Cup in the Round of 32 and is unbeaten in the USL Championship this season.
Key Ingredients
Striker Sebastián Vivas found his fifth goal in six games for South Georgia after scoring Tormenta’s first goal of the night against Union Omaha. The Argentinian striker leads South Georgia in goals across all competitions.
Tormenta FC Captain Conor Doyle assisted Vivas’ goal in Omaha. Doyle’s assist was his first for the Ibises and his third goal contribution of the 2024 season. Doyle played a key role in South Georgia’s Open Cup win against Miami FC, where he delivered the initial ball that led to Jake Dengler’s opener and scored the equalizer in the 69th minute.
South Georgia’s defense has proven to be an attacking threat as well in the Open Cup this season, with defenders Jake Dengler, Callum Stretch, Joshua Ramos, and Nick Akoto all getting on the score sheet. The defense has also played a significant role in keeping a solid defense for goalkeeper Drew Romig, who has had two clean sheets in three Open Cup matches.
Foe’s Formula
Charleston Battery’s main man this season has been midfielder Nick Markanich. With 12 goals, he is the top scorer in the United States across all domestic leagues in 2024. The 24-year-old also leads Charleston in assists with three.
