STATESBORO, Ga. – After announcing Ian Cameron as head coach on Wednesday, South Georgia Tormenta FC hits the road for a must-win match versus Fort Lauderdale CF on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. ET. Last Friday, Tormenta FC took a point from Union Omaha and now looks for a road win tomorrow and momentum to take itself back up the table.
“It's a great privilege from a club that’s taken a great chance on me at the beginning of the year with John and the owners bringing me in,” Head Coach Ian Cameron said about Wednesday’s announcement. “I’m incredibly grateful right now. Obviously, with the game on Saturday, the focus is purely on that.”
Saturday will be Tormenta FC's second meeting with Fort Lauderdale CF. On Aug. 8, Fort Lauderdale gave Tormenta FC its first loss of the season in Erk Russell Park despite Mikie Rowe’s late match goal in the 93rd minute. It was an end-to-end match with multiple attempts on goal for Tormenta FC, but ultimately Fort Lauderdale came out on top with a 2-1 win.
“It's a big challenge, but a really good one,” Cameron said. “We’re going to be playing against guys who will be in the MLS in the next couple years if they stay on the same trajectory. This is the challenge that we’re here for, and let’s see how our guys are pitted against it. There's a result there, and there's a way to go and beat them. We have to respect them without fearing them, and that's what we aim to do.”
After being out for the past two matches, Jordan Skelton is back and eligible to play tomorrow. With a bolstered backline this match and continued offensive opportunities, Tormenta FC should be able to break through tomorrow with a much-needed win. The club has notched 115 shots this season in comparison to Fort Lauderdale’s 81 shots in total, and Marco Micaletto continues to lead USL League One in chances created with 26.
“It will give the group a boost to have some guys there that have been out for a little bit,” Cameron said. “It will help the general vibe of the group, and that's going to be incredibly important. I’m looking forward to taking a full squad down there, going and getting the energy levels back up and looking forward. Where we've been so far is what it is, so we have to look forward and try to get better in those games and take it one game at a time.”
