STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC will face Union Omaha for the second and final time this season on Saturday, Oct. 3, from Werner Park. With momentum from its last win against Fort Lauderdale CF and almost two weeks rest, Tormenta FC looks to take all three points home with just five matches left in the season. A win would be pivotal for either side as they continue to fight for a spot in the 2020 USL League One Final.
“We’ve both taken a couple of losses, but they had a great result last night, and we obviously won our last game, so it will be entertaining,” TFC Head Coach Ian Cameron said. “It will be a fast-paced game with two teams that are going to play at a high-energy level, and I think it will be a good one to watch for the spectators.”
Tormenta FC has a second chance to defeat Union Omaha after taking a point from them in Erk Russell Park on Sept. 11 with a 2-2 draw. Tormenta FC started the match off strong with an early goal from Luca Mayr and an Omaha own goal that led the team to its biggest halftime lead this season.
If Tormenta FC holds off Omaha, which is known for coming back late in games to save points, while finishing its scoring chances, then all three points are tangible for the club on Saturday. The two sides are comparable offensively, with Omaha notching fourteen total goals this season and Tormenta trailing closely with thirteen. Tormenta FC edges out Union Omaha’s 37.20% shooting accuracy, completing 51.60% of its shots taken. Omaha’s Ethan Vanacore-Decker and Tormenta FC’s Luca Mayr both are league leaders for total shots taken with 28 and 25 respectively.
Tormenta FC has an advantage coming into Saturday with fresh legs and two weeks of preparation, while Union Omaha plays its third match in a week. Union Omaha had a big 3-2 comeback win versus Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday night but lost its previous three matches. Tormenta FC has lost just once in its past five games and looks to improve this form with three points every match for the rest of the season.
“We’ve been seeing how engaged they can be day in and day out and pushing them to play at a certain intensity level at training,” Cameron said. “And they’ve been spot on and have been quite ferocious at training. We look forward to carrying that into Saturday and really seeing the work we’ve done the last two weeks and how does that matriculate into this match.”
