STATESBORO, Ga. – As part of South Georgia Tormenta FC's inaugural Training Center Program, Academy players participated in performance tests to measure their speed, agility, power and overall athleticism.
Overseen by USL Academy coaches Nick Jaramillo and Jordan Melia, USL League One Head Coach Ian Cameron and Director of Sports Science Greg Ryan, the group of Academy talents took part in a vertical jump test and pro-agility shuttle run test prior to the team's first training session at The Clubhouse Fields.
"This data allows us another piece of the puzzle to help our players understand where they stand against each other and to help determine player strengths and areas of improvement," Ryan said. "Additionally, having our Academy players perform the same tests as our Team 1 and 2 players allows us as a Sports Performance staff to build a database of player performance and determine the level of athleticism that our players are currently at and where we can build or forecast our players as they develop."
Grant Hampton, who played for Tormenta FC 2 in 2019 and was on the roster for Tormenta FC's League One team throughout the 2020 season, finished first in both the vertical jump and shuttle run. Meanwhile, Ethan Lee, JJ Fernandez, Gabe Orta, Jaiden Middleton, Brandon Nugara and Terrell "TJ" Headman performed well in both tests.
The group of Academy standouts averaged 20.5 inches on the vertical jump and 4.57 seconds on the shuttle run. In comparison, Tormenta FC's 2020 League One squad averaged 23.9 inches on the vertical jump and 4.19 seconds on the shuttle run over the course of the season.
Tormenta FC plans to hold additional Training Center Program events leading up to the 2021 USL Academy League season, with the next event scheduled for December. The club will announce additional details of its USL Academy team, including the official roster, exhibitions and more, in the coming months.
Tormenta FC was named a founding member of the USL Academy League’s Southeast Division in October. The inaugural season of Academy League play is due to kick off in spring 2021 and will provide clubs in all three of the USL's senior divisions (USL Championship, USL League One and USL League Two) with an elite youth development and competition platform.
