COLUMBIA, Sc. – In one of the most anticipated games of the USL W League season, South Georgia Tormenta FC brought the three points back to Statesboro following a 3-2 win against SC United Bantams. South Georgia was able to hand Bantams their first loss of the season and has minimized its five-point gap between the first place SC United Bantams to only two points.
The first offensive play for South Georgia came in the 15th minute, as a poor-positioned pass from the Bantams back line was received by Amy Andrews who cleared a defender and took the shot from the 25th yard line; a top-right ping from Andrews left the Bantams keeper with no possibilities to stop the shot, securing the first goal of the match.
The goals did not stop as in the 20th minute South Georgia’s Isabella Gutierrez put a cross into the middle of the box, finding Ellis Nemtsov who made a precise finish to beat the keeper for the second time this afternoon.
The festival of goals continued; this time around, the home side was able to get one back as South Carolina’s Emily Yapple got a clean finish to score her fifth goal of the season in the 25th minute.
Three minutes later, the home side’s Corinna Zullo equalized the score in a very intense 30 minutes of action.
A very intense second half saw South Georgia get its first opportunity in the 67th minute of the match. A ground pass by Abby Wolf found Amy Andrews in the penalty box, putting her shot just wide of the mark.
South Georgia knew the last couple of minutes could be detrimental to their 2022 W League season. Although the Bantams were able to hold back Tormenta FC’s offensive powerhouse for the entirety of the second half, the pressure was increased, and the Bantams defense was unable to detain the danger any further.
In a heroic effort, Amy Andrews kept Tormenta FC’s season alive following a cross from Isabel Kopp; Andrews finished the cross and gave Tormenta FC a 3-2 win on the road against the league leaders SC United Bantams.
Tonight’s Player of the Match, presented by Galactic Comics and Games, is Isabel Kopp. Kopp’s versatility to defend and create chances for the front line made her shine in a vital win on the road and hand Bantams their first loss of the season. Kopp played a cross to Andrews in the third goal to earn Tormenta FC’s fourth win of the season.
