STATESBORO, Ga. – Today, the United Soccer League (USL), alongside every USL League One team, announced its 2023 regular season home opener, which will see South Georgia Tormenta FC play against the Charlotte Independence in Week Two of the regular season on March 25 at 7:30 p.m. ET from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium. The match will be the fifth official fixture between both teams, with Tormenta FC overcoming the Independence twice, only losing once and drawing once.
In its title-defending season, South Georgia looks to add its third consecutive win against the Independence after obtaining its first-ever win on Week 23 of the 2022 League One regular season in a 0-2 victory on the road.
South Georgia then defeated the Charlotte side 2-1 in the 2022 League One Playoffs. A Kazaiah Sterling brace against the Independence helped South Georgia reach its first semifinal match before the team ultimately won its first-ever League One title. Sterling is the top goal-scorer between both teams with three.
The Independence got its first win against Tormenta FC at Erk Russell Park on Aug. 13; however, they have yet to beat South Georgia at Tormenta Stadium.
South Georgia and the Independence also faced each other in February 2020, when the Independence, then a USL Championship side, defeated Tormenta FC 4-2 in Columbia, South Carolina.
Ahead of the home opener, gates will open at 5:30 p.m. ET,as local musicians Greg and Willis will be performing live from Tormenta Stadium two hours prior to kickoff.
Tormenta FC opens up its 2023 USL League One season on the road against North Carolina FC on Friday, March 17 from WakeMed Soccer Park.
