South Georgia Tormenta FC’s Pedro Fonseca Named to the USL Jägermeister Team of the Round

STATESBORO, Ga. – May 3, 2024 – South Georgia Tormenta FC’s Pedro Fonseca was named a member of the USL Jägermeister Team of the Round for his high performance in the inaugural match of the USL Jägermeister Cup. Tormenta FC played its first round of the USL Jägermeister Cup on April 27 against Charlotte Independence at Tormenta Stadium, where South Georgia added one point to its standings and Charlotte added two.

Fonseca was named to the bench of the USL Jägermeister Team of the Round for his diligence and high performance on the pitch, playing all 90 minutes of the match, netting a goal during penalty kicks and assisting several attempted shots on goal.

The powerhouse midfielder, Fonseca, won a total of seven duels and created four chances for his team prior to opening scoring for Tormenta during penalty kicks. Fonseca’s skill and grit has shone this month, as he has had three assists and netted one goal in April alone.

Tormenta FC Announces 2023 Theme Nights

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC proudly presents eight theme nights for its 2023 USL League One season, creating engaging experiences for its supporters and appreciating different communities throughout South Georgia and the Lowcountry of South Carolina.

The club has created theme nights that engage with supporters and the surrounding community in fun and unique ways, like Paws & Claws Night, Kickin’ Into High Gear and Military Appreciation Night.

MARCH 25: HOME OPENER

Despite opening up the regular season on the road at North Carolina FC, South Georgia is set to open up its title-defending season at home against the Charlotte Independence, and fans will have an opportunity to take pictures with the League One trophy. After a long offseason, fans return to Tormenta Stadium to see their favorite players take the field again, ready to defend their title and continue their winning ways. The atmosphere will be electric, as South Georgia looks to kick off its regular season in front of a packed stadium of passionate fans.

MAY 27: MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT

Tormenta FC will host Military Appreciation Night on May 27 against the Richmond Kickers. All active or retired military members will receive a 50% off discount on General Admission tickets with proof of valid military identification at the ticketing tent the day of the game.

On June 19, Tormenta FC will proudly host its third annual Juneteenth Night in partnership with local Black organizations, with more activities and promotions to be announced closer to the date.

Juneteenth is an American holiday often referred to as a ‘second Independence Day’ that celebrates the legal end of slavery in the United States and brings light to the fact that despite the Emancipation Proclamation, slavery did not fully end until months or years later in some states.

JULY 22: KICKIN’ INTO HIGH GEAR

Tormenta FC will be hosting a TFC Car Show at The Clubhouse in Statesboro, Georgia, which will take place from 12-4 p.m. ET and arrival starting at 11 a.m. ET. Award categories will be disclosed closer to the event, and these awards will be given out during halftime of the match (roughly 8:30 p.m. ET) inside Tormenta Stadium.

Tormenta FC Adds Midfielder Elijah Amo to 2023 USL League One Roster

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC has announced the addition of midfielder Elijah Amo to its 2023 USL League One roster on a one-year deal with a club option for another year, pending league and federation approval.

“We’re always searching for guys in the market who have just slipped through the cracks but have high potential. Elijah fits that mold. He was a really impactful player at Louisville, but joining an MLS organization midseason is not easy, and sliding doors scenarios can happen both ways. Maryland Bobcats as an organization do a really nice job giving home to some of these boys, and we’re excited to have the chance to bring Elijah to Tormenta now. Dynamic wingers will always be a feature of our staff, and in Elijah, we have someone who can beat players with the ball at his feet but also beat players with his movement behind the opposition. If he keeps improving his output, he will have a great career in the game.”

Amo joins Tormenta FC after a successful year with the Maryland Bobcats FC in 2022. Amo quickly became a fan-favorite after being a pivotal part of Maryland’s playoff run. Amo featured in 21 games across all competitions and contributed with five goals and four assists.

Amo was selected 34th overall in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft by Real Salt Lake.

Collegiately, Amo starred at the University of Louisville, where he played in 60 games and totaled 3,045 minutes at Louisville. Amo contributed with six goals and four assists throughout his time at Louisville. While at Louisville, he was a part of the 2018 ACC Championship team and was named a Third Team All-ACC player in 2021.

The DMV native played with Bethesda Soccer Club/Academy from the age of 10 to 18, winning the Maryland State Cup and US Youth Soccer Region 1 Championship. Amo was also a part of the United States U-16 Youth National Team.

The growing 2023 roster features a strong core of seven returners ready to fight for a second League One title with the added power of new midfielder Matheus Cassini and first-year professional Collin Mocyunas, and many more new additions will be announced in the coming weeks.

Lars Eckenrode Joins Tormenta FC Front Office

STATESBORO, Ga. – Lars Eckenrode has joined the South Georgia Tormenta FC Front Office as the Coordinator of Special Projects. To note, Eckenrode becomes the first player in Tormenta FC history to join the front office after retirement.

Eckenrode will seek to put on community events, and camps and clinics on behalf of the Tormenta FC organization. Additionally, Eckenrode will be an avid advocator for Tormenta FC and his local Statesboro community. He will proactively be seeking to strengthen relationships and partnerships with local youth soccer clubs, organizations and schools.

“I am extremely excited to embark on this new chapter of my life working with Tormenta. I have been with the club from the beginning and although I am no longer able to help by contributing on the field, I am really looking forward to growing the club with the amazing front office staff that I have come to know throughout my four years as a player. I am very grateful to the organization for having created this role for me in which I can channel the same work ethic, hunger and passion I had as a player into a new direction.”

Eckenrode spent four years playing with South Georgia’s USL League One team, where he quickly became a fan-favorite and a leader on and off the field. Eckenrode is one of four players in Tormenta FC history to wear the captain’s armband after wearing it for four games in 2019.

Overall, Eckenrode featured in 21 games for Tormenta FC, scoring the equalizer against Orlando City B on April 14, 2019, and the first goal in South Georgia’s 3-1 win against Greenville Triumph on June 20, 2021.

In the game against Orlando City B, Eckenrode suffered a concussion and neck whiplash that kept him out for six months. The following year, Eckenrode had a double fracture of my tibial plateau and was ruled out for three months. In 2021, the defender suffered from a torn meniscus which required surgery, sidelining him for three months. In his final season as a professional, Eckenrode tore his meniscus again, requiring surgery and is still recovering from it.

A University of Michigan alumnus, Eckenrode spent four seasons with the Wolverines men’s soccer team, which he captained in 2016. During his collegiate career, Eckenrode appeared on the Big Ten All-Rookie Team in 2013 and the College Sports Madness Preseason All-Big Ten Team in 2014. Eckenrode was drafted in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, where he was picked up in the fourth round by the Toronto FC organization.

Tormenta FC Announces 2023 Preseason Schedule

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC has announced a preseason schedule of five friendlies as the USL League One champion gears up for its title-defending season in 2023. Tormenta FC’s preseason schedule sees it take on three local NCAA Division I programs in Georgia Southern University, Georgia State, and Stetson University. In addition, South Georgia will also have two preseason matches against USL Championship sides, the Tampa Bay Rowdies and the Charleston Battery.

The League One squad will begin training at Tormenta FC Training Ground on Wednesday, Feb. 1, in preparation for its upcoming friendlies and regular-season opener on the road at North Carolina FC on March 18.

For Tormenta FC, the 2023 preseason will be the first as the defending champion. Therefore, it will be critical to find chemistry early to start the title-defending season in the best way possible.

Tormenta FC opens up its preseason against Georgia Southern from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 4 p.m. ET. In a historic game for both programs, Georgia Southern will play its first game under newly appointed Head Coach Lee Squires as the program prepares for the spring season in the coming weeks.

Seven days later, Tormenta FC hosts Georgia State of the Sun Belt Conference, with the friendly being played from Tormenta Stadium. Of note, Tormenta FC Academy alum Stephen O’Hearn returns to Statesboro to play against Tormenta FC.

South Georgia then takes on two USL Championship sides, the Rowdies, and the Battery. South Georgia welcomes Tampa Bay to Tormenta Stadium on Feb. 25. This fixture will mark the first time a USL Championship side is set to play at Tormenta Stadium.

Charleston and Tormenta FC meet again after the South Georgia side eliminated the Battery in the Second Round of the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. This time around, under a new coaching staff, the Battery now test themselves in the first few stages of its rebuilding season under Ben Pirmann. The preseason friendly will take place from Charleston, South Carolina, at Patriots Point Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. The preseason friendly will be closed to the public.

Lily Gibbons Named Tormenta FC’s First-Ever Recruiting Coordinator

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC has announced the addition of Lily Gibbons to the Tormenta FC Front Office, where she will serve as the first-ever Recruiting Coordinator for the Tormenta FC Academy.

Gibbons returns to Tormenta FC after interning with the TFC Sales Department in 2020 while enrolled at Georgia Southern University.

The newest addition to the Tormenta FC Front Office is a graduate of Greenbrier High School and earned a B.S. in Communications from Georgia Southern University in 2022.

Gibbons will play a crucial role in the growth of the Tormenta FC Academy through the area and will help grow the reach of Tormenta FC to more audiences. In this role, Gibbons will provide a plethora of information to families all over the area interested in joining the Tormenta FC Academy.

TFC’s newest front office addition describes herself as a “chronic hobbyist” and names film photography, sports, surfing, working out and loving her pet cat as some of her favorite hobbies. In addition, Gibbons enjoys creating the sound of music and is a guitarist and a bassist.

Tormenta FC to Elevate USL Academy Team

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC announced today that Tormenta FC 2 will take a one-year hiatus from USL League Two play, as the club aims to elevate Tormenta FC’s USL Academy team throughout the 2023 season, continuing the club’s commitment to making Tormenta FC Academy a gold standard for USL.

With this shift, the USL Academy team in Statesboro will provide a better stepping stone for local players to interact, train and compete with the USL League One professional team. Additionally, the Tormenta FC coaching staff will emphasize developing the local USL Academy talent around South Georgia and the Low Country of South Carolina while also allowing them to experience a professional soccer setting.

“Our club and USL League Two have enjoyed a fruitful bond over the last decade,” Tormenta FC Technical Director and USL League One Head Coach Ian Cameron said. “It’s a model we remain big advocates of and will recruit heavily from for the purpose of our USL League One team. Indeed, our USL League One Championship-winning team last year was littered with players unearthed from this system. Tormenta FC to Host Charlotte Independence in Home Opener on March 25

STATESBORO, Ga. – Today, the United Soccer League (USL), alongside every USL League One team, announced its 2023 regular season home opener, which will see South Georgia Tormenta FC play against the Charlotte Independence in Week Two of the regular season on March 25 at 7:30 p.m. ET from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium. The match will be the fifth official fixture between both teams, with Tormenta FC overcoming the Independence twice, only losing once and drawing once.

In its title-defending season, South Georgia looks to add its third consecutive win against the Independence after obtaining its first-ever win on Week 23 of the 2022 League One regular season in a 0-2 victory on the road.

South Georgia then defeated the Charlotte side 2-1 in the 2022 League One Playoffs. A Kazaiah Sterling brace against the Independence helped South Georgia reach its first semifinal match before the team ultimately won its first-ever League One title. Sterling is the top goal-scorer between both teams with three.

The Independence got its first win against Tormenta FC at Erk Russell Park on Aug. 13; however, they have yet to beat South Georgia at Tormenta Stadium.

South Georgia and the Independence also faced each other in February 2020, when the Independence, then a USL Championship side, defeated Tormenta FC 4-2 in Columbia, South Carolina.

Ahead of the home opener, gates will open at 5:30 p.m. ET,as local musicians Greg and Willis will be performing live from Tormenta Stadium two hours prior to kickoff.

The Fourth Time’s the Charm: How the Smallest Pro Soccer Market in the U.S. Obtained its First Pro Title

A professional soccer team from Statesboro, Georgia, won a national title in front of a sell-out crowd and broadcasted live on ESPN2 for the whole nation to see.

Sometimes, that sentence seems too far-fetched to be reality.

But, it happened, and it is one of the greatest accomplishments not only in Statesboro’s vast history but also United States soccer history as well.

Four years after its professional debut, South Georgia Tormenta FC finally obtained its first USL League One title under Head Coach Ian Cameron and his coaching staff. Finding the right players was just a part of the equation, while the unity shown throughout the ups and downs made this team more than a team. Rather, those moments throughout the year made them a family of dreamers who all accomplished something no other Tormenta FC team had done: going all the way.

The 2022 season started after the final whistle of the 2021 season. With no time to waste, recruiting the right players began. From bringing Joshua Phelps back, to signing his center back partner in Jake Dengler, to bringing Tormenta FC 2 talent into the mix with Gabriel Cabral and Chris Heckenberg, to breaking the market by signing former Tottenham Hotspur product Kazaiah Sterling, the team started to build chemistry. After making a decent run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the players and coaches started to believe in not only themselves but each other.

Despite some success in the national competition, in League One regular season play, the team was unable to win at home for the first couple of months. A lot of things had to come together for this team to go out and get the League One title. Late additions to the roster in Mukwelle Akale and Ryan Sierakowski added offensive experience, while a goalkeeper transition through the middle of the season was ultimately a decision that paid off. First-year goalkeeper TJ Bush was given the opportunity to start in an away game at Chattanooga, and despite a loss, Bush performed well and was trusted to be the starter for the rest of the season, only losing once when starting.

Regardless of the League One title, if the season finished in October, it would have been seen as a success in many of the minds of Tormenta Nation. Prior to the playoffs, South Georgia finished the season with a winning record for the first time in club history and with one of the best strikers and defensive center back pairings across the league. To add, Gabriel Cabral became the fourth captain in Tormenta FC history in his first year as a professional. When change was needed, the team adapted to whatever was needed from them, which ultimately led to the first-ever League One title.
