MATTHEWS, N.C. – South Georgia Tormenta FC impressed tonight in one of the biggest tests in club history, battling against Major League Soccer’s Charlotte FC before ultimately falling 1-4 in the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Matheus Cassini scored Tormenta FC’s only goal of the night, making Cassini the second-ever Tormenta FC player to score against an MLS franchise.
South Georgia took the game to the home team in the first couple of minutes of the first half. The Statesboro side opened up its opportunity with a shot on target from Kingsford Adjei. Despite a goal from the home team, South Georgia never gave up and, at times, was the better team.
South Georgia’s Davey Mason was shown a second yellow card, culminating in a red card early in the second half.
With TFC down to 10 men on the field, the home team secured three more goals to end tonight’s game in its favor. Yet again, Cassini’s spark led the offense to a goal after a superb strike from afar beat the visiting team’s keeper.
Despite defeat, South Georgia continues to elevate its competitive level by playing against talented teams and performing well against teams from higher divisions.
UPCOMING:
Tormenta FC will host the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m ET from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium.
