STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC are set to welcome Tennessee SC to Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium for a second consecutive home USL W League match on Monday, May 22 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Tormenta FC enters the contest following a tough 2-1 defeat to Birmingham Legion FC last Friday.
Gemma Jefferson slotted home the first goal of the season for the Statesboro side in the first half of play against Birmingham on Friday. Her lone goal for the home side and confident distribution in the midfield earned her “Player of the Match” honors. Through two games, Tormenta FC sits at 0-1-1 and fourth in the South Central division.
Head coach Jim Robbins made five changes to the opening night lineup in Friday’s contest. Emma Tucker, Smith Cathey, Abby Gemza, Gemma Jefferson and Elis Nemtsov all made their first starts of the season.
Tennessee SC opened the season with a 3-1 loss to Chattanooga. Forward Katie Toney opened the scoring in the fifth minute for the Tennessee outfit, but Chattanooga stormed back with three unanswered goals to earn the three points. Tennessee SC was an inaugural member of the USL W League in the South Central division. Last season, the team finished fifth in division standings. South Georgia took wins in both matches against Tennessee last season winning 2-0 away and 8-1 at home.
In June of 2021, Tormenta FC was named a founding member of the USL W League, an elite pre-professional pathway for women looking to build their careers both on and off the pitch. Tormenta FC won its first-ever USL W League title in 2022 after defeating the Minnesota Aurora in front of 6,500 fans in Eagan, Minnesota.
Tormenta FC provides opportunities to local and national players to develop and start their professional careers in Statesboro, Georgia. In just one year, Tormenta FC’s USL W League team has produced six professional players with Sydney Martinez joining Jenae Packard, Emily Burke, Kelly Giddes, Abigail Wolf and Jodi Medina as the latest player to sign a contract in Europe.
