STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC travels to face Birmingham Legion FC on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. ET at Protective Stadium. The match against the Legion is the reverse fixture to an early 2-1 defeat at home on May 19.
Tormenta FC earned its first shutout victory of the 2023 USL W League season on Sunday night, scoring three second half goals in a comprehensive 3-0 showing. Defender Emma Tucker earned Player of the Match honors for her goal and assist contributions in a substitute appearance. Goalkeeper Blair Currie earned her first start of the season between the posts for the W League outfit, boasting several key saves and a clean sheet.
Midfielder Smith Cathey remains out for the Statesboro side, but Head Coach Jim Robbins and his staff will look to travel to Birmingham with a strong, deep squad to challenge the Alabama side for all three points. After six games played, the Statesboro side is tied for second place in the South Central Division on eight points.
The Legion come into Wednesday afternoon’s contest following a 4-1 defeat away to the Chattanooga Lady Red Wolves SC on Sunday night. Midfielder Madeline Massie scored the lone goal for the Legion. Wednesday’s match is the home opener for the Alabama side after four successive road fixtures. Birmingham sits in third place in the South Central Division on seven points.
In June of 2021, Tormenta FC was named a founding member of the USL W League, an elite pre-professional pathway for women looking to build their careers both on and off the pitch. Tormenta FC won its first-ever USL W League title in 2022 after defeating the Minnesota Aurora in front of 6,500 fans in Eagan, Minnesota.
