STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC is set to host the SC United Bantams from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. ET. Tormenta FC currently boasts a 2-1-1 all-time record against the South Carolina side, and Head Coach Jim Robbins and his staff will look to bolster the win column.
Thursday’s contest comes after a difficult test on the road for the Statesboro side against Tennessee SC. After a competitive first half, Tormenta FC trailed the Tennessee side by a goal. Despite inventive forward play and resilient goalkeeping play, Tennessee SC tallied two more goals in the second half to claim all three points on the night. The result means the Statesboro side remains fourth in the South Central Division on nine points after eight games played.
South Georgia will hope to add several names back to the squad after missing several players through injury. Tess Werts made her return to USL W League action on Monday night after missing the previous two matches. Defender Roisin McGovern and midfielder Celine Ottah will enter the match as questionable, and midfielder Smith Cathey remains out with a lower leg injury.
Last time out for SC United Bantams, the Columbia side took down Birmingham Legion WFC at home by a 4-0 scoreline. Forward Corinna Zullo opened the scoring in the first half for the home side before three unanswered second-half finishes secured the win. The Bantams currently sit sixth in the South Central Division on eight points after six games played.
South Georgia will look to stifle the visitors recent scoring success in Thursday night’s contest in search of three points. The match can be viewed online on South Georgia Tormenta FC’s YouTube page (https://www.youtube.com/@TormentaFC/streams).
In June of 2021, Tormenta FC was named a founding member of the USL W League, an elite pre-professional pathway for women looking to build their careers both on and off the pitch. Tormenta FC won its first-ever USL W League title in 2022 after defeating the Minnesota Aurora in front of 6,500 fans in Eagan, Minnesota.
Tormenta FC provides opportunities to local and national players to develop and start their professional careers in Statesboro, Georgia. In just one year, Tormenta FC’s USL W League team has produced six professional players with Sydney Martinez joining Jenae Packard, Emily Burke, Kelly Giddes, Abigail Wolf and Jodi Medina as the latest player to sign a contract in Europe.
