STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC defender Róisín McGovern was voted the South Georgia Tormenta FC Player of the Month (USL W League) for June. McGovern featured in five games for the 2022 USL W League champions in the month of June. McGovern’s presence throughout the defensive and offensive end proved to be crucial to Tormenta FC’s strong month.
The winner was determined via a weighted average from the following three voting bodies:
- A fan vote comprised 60 percent of the poll.
- The Tormenta FC staff ballots comprised 20 percent of the poll.
- Media ballots comprised 20 percent of the poll.

McGovern earned 52.96% of the total vote, with forward Kiana Jacobson coming in second with 29.77%. Defender Emma Tucker and midfielder Gemma Jefferson followed at 14.94% and 2.33%, respectively.
Over the course of June, McGovern contributed significantly to Tormenta FC’s success. Despite a demanding schedule, McGovern featured in five out of the eight games. Standing at 6-foot-1, McGovern’s commanding presence proved to be an insurmountable obstacle for opposing attackers. McGovern’s height made her a threat during offensive set pieces, as she consistently emerged as a formidable target. Accumulating a total of 422 minutes of playtime, her impact was crucial in every match played.
In June of 2021, Tormenta FC was named a founding member of the USL W League, an elite pre-professional pathway for women looking to build their careers both on and off the pitch. Tormenta FC won its first-ever USL W League title in 2022 after defeating the Minnesota Aurora in front of 6,500 fans in Eagan, Minnesota.
Tormenta FC provides opportunities to local and national players to develop and start their professional careers in Statesboro, Georgia. In just one year, Tormenta FC’s USL W League team has produced six professional players with Sydney Martinez joining Jenae Packard, Emily Burke, Kelly Giddes, Abigail Wolf and Jodi Medina as the latest player to sign a contract in Europe.
