STATESBORO, Ga. (December 30, 2023) South Georgia Tormenta FC are excited to announce that defender Jake Dengler will be rejoining us for the 2024 season. The 25-year-old returns to South Georgia on a one year contract.
Head Coach Ian Cameron spoke about the return of Dengler to the team saying, “Jake’s presence was missed last season for the lions share of the games. We both felt we needed his legacy at the club to finish on a higher note, so we’re delighted to extend his stay with us again. He’s been working hard to make 2024 his best professional season yet, and if that does manifest, we’ll have an elite defender leading our backline.”
Dengler signed with Tormenta FC in 2022 and has made 51 appearances for the club including a start in the 2022 USL League One Final. During his first season with the club, Dengler was a member of the 2022 All-League Second Team and was fifth in the league with 24 blocked shots. Dengler only appeared in 14 USL League One matches during the 2023 season, missing significant time due to injuries.
“I can’t wait to get back to Statesboro to get going with all the new faces,” said Dengler. “With the way last season went not only for me individually but for the team missing out on playoffs, we left a lot on the table that we’ll be going after this season. It should be a very exciting season, Tormenta nation deserves more trophies and we are looking to bringing that to everyone involved this season!”
The 6-foot-5 defender joined Tormenta FC after leading the Maryland Bobcats FC backline and being named the team’s Most Valuable Player during the 2021 season. Dengler started 23 matches and played 2,051 minutes for Maryland.
Dengler played for The University of Connecticut in 2019 where he started all 17 matches, scoring two goals and recording two assists.
The Baltimore native began his collegiate career in 2017 at CCBC Essex in Baltimore Maryland, finishing second on the team with 11 goals in 20 matches. Dengler then transferred to Loyola University Maryland for the 2018 season where he started all 16 matches for the Greyhounds and scored two goals, earning a selection to the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region Second Team.
