STATESBORO, Ga. – February 16, 2024 –Tormenta FC Academy alumna and 2022 USL W League champion Sydney Martinez has received a call-up to the Puerto Rico Women’s National Football Team for the upcoming Women’s Gold Cup playoff against Haiti on Feb. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
This year is the inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup, with qualifying made up of 33 teams in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The final tournament is made up of 12 teams.
Five CONCACAF teams have qualified, which are Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, and the United States. Four other women’s national teams make up the qualified teams so far, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Paraguay.
The Puerto Rican shot-stopper is looking to lead her nation to qualify for the CONCACAF W Gold Cup with a victory over the Haitians.
The other two playoff matches consist of El Salvador versus Guatemala and Guayana versus Dominican Republic. If Martinez and Puerto Rico arise victorious, the teams will play in Group B with Brazil, Panama, and Colombia.
Martinez most recently played for IK Grand Bodø of the 1. Division is the second tier of women’s soccer in Norway.
In the 2022 USL W League Final, Martinez became the hero after saving a penalty kick in the 110th minute of extra time. Martinez would end up being named the USL W League Final MVP. Martinez made history as she became Tormenta FC’s first Golden Glove winner across all teams within the club. Martinez also served as the team captain for the 2022 W League season.
