STATESBORO, Ga – April 15, 2024 – South Georgia Tormenta FC is on the road for a midweek matchup against USL Championship side Miami FC. The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. April 17 at FIU Soccer Stadium. Wednesday’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match will mark the first time the two clubs have faced each other.

Tormenta FC reached the third round of the 109th edition of the Open Cup after defeating FC America CFL Spurs 1-0 in the first round and the Savannah Clovers 4-0 in the second round. South Georgia won its most recent match in USL League One play 3-0 against Lexington SC on April 6. In this match, Gabriel Rodriguez, Pedro Fonseca, and Sebastián Vivas each contributed a goal to the team’s victory.
Miami FC enters The Cup in the third round and has a 1-4-1 (W-L-D) record in the USL Championship this season. Miami is coming into Wednesday’s match having lost four out of their last five games, most recently losing 5-2 to fellow Florida side Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Key Ingredients
South Georgia’s defense has been instrumental in the team’s success in the Open Cup, not allowing a goal in 180 minutes thus far. Drew Romig has been between the sticks for both matches, with the centerback partnership of Preston Kilwien and Jake Dengler in front of him.
Niall Watson leads the team in goals with three goals scored so far this season. The Englishman netted his third of the season in the second round of the Open Cup when he headed home a Fonseca cross in the second minute.
Foe’s Formula
Head Coach Ian Cameron will look to stop midfielder Allen Gavilanes who has scored four goals in Miami’s last four matches. The former Greenville Triumph player is the only member of Miami FC’s squad to have scored multiple goals this season. Gavilanes has played on the right flank and through the middle this season.
