Statesboro, Ga – April 29, 2024—South Georgia Tormenta FC is thrilled to announce the return of center-back Roisin McGovern for the 2024 W League season, pending league approval. The Irish youth international returns to the squad after spending the 2023 collegiate season with the Dayton Flyers.
“For me, the decision to return to Tormenta and Statesboro was an easy one. My experience during the 2023 season was extremely positive. The facilities and set up in Tormenta are of the highest quality.” McGovern exclaimed. “The buy-in to the club by the fans as well as Darin and Netra just shows how much the club is a part of the community. The fact that Tormenta won the championship in 2022 just makes the decision easier.”
During the 2023 season, McGovern played for the University of Dayton, where she made seven appearances and tallied 128 minutes for the Flyers.
Prior to transferring to Dayton, McGovern was a staple in the defensive line at Temple University, featuring in 42 games for the program, clocking in 3,744 minutes. In just one year, McGovern became the team captain for Temple and continued to captain Temple in 2022.
In the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 seasons, McGovern competed on the Ireland Women’s U17 National Team, which played in the UEFA U17 Championship. In 2019, McGovern received another national team call-up to the Ireland Women’s U19 National Team, which won seven straight qualifying games. McGovern captained her nation in the UEFA Women’s Championship qualifiers and led Ireland to advance to the Elite phase of the championship.
McGovern also featured in Asheville City’s inaugural USL W League campaign in 2022, leading the team to a fifth-place finish in the South Atlantic Division. McGovern featured in nine games, accumulating 700 minutes and scoring twice. Head Coach Jim Robbins spoke highly about the Tormenta FC Academy product, saying, “It is great to have Ro back for another season here at Tormenta FC. Her leadership and experience were huge for us in 2023. Her physical presence, 1v1 defending, and quality and range of passing are all qualities that we will need again at the back of our team. Her professionalism and mature approach to training and games are both calming influences critical to our team’s success.”
