STATESBORO, Ga. – Joshua Phelps has been named the South Georgia Tormenta FC Player of the Month for October following exceptional performances on the defensive and offensive ends in the final month of the 2020 USL League One regular season.
Phelps, who has donned the magenta and blue since 2018, started the month on the back line, making big plays for the team against Union Omaha and FC Tucson. Head Coach Ian Cameron, however, moved him into the forward position for the remaining matches of the season, and Phelps stepped up. The Australian scored his first professional goal and recorded an assist versus New England Revolution II in the team's 2020 home finale.
Phelps earned 38.8% of the total vote, edging out midfielder Nil Vinyals, who earned 34.8%. Defender Curtis Thorn collected 21.6% of the vote, while midfielder Ricardo Gomez ended up with 4.2% of the total. The winner was determined via a weighted average from the following three voting bodies:
- A fan vote comprised 60 percent of the poll.
- Tormenta FC staff ballots comprised 20 percent of the poll.
- A media ballot comprised 20 percent of the poll.
