FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 27, 2019 Tormenta FC Kicks Off Second Annual Development Squad
For the second year in a row, Tormenta FC is hosting high-potential youth players through their Development Squad. This summer’s Development Squad players come from Tormenta’s Youth Academy, Wofford College, Davidson College and Georgia Southern University. Four players from Pro Shottas Soccer School in Barbados have also joined the Development Squad for two weeks.
Tormenta’s relationship with Pro Shottas Soccer School in Barbados began three years ago when Head Coach John Miglarese traveled to help coach their team. Three of the players go to St. Leonard’s Boys’ Secondary School which is notorious for producing athletic champions in Barbados. On top of educational success, all four players have represented Barbados internationally at the U23, U20, and U17 levels.
“Lemar Catlyn is 16 and fresh from playing for Barbados in the U17 World Cup Qualifiers,” said Pro Shottas Coach Greg Castagne. “The others are all 17, Jaiden Miller, Tyrique Belle, and Niall Reid-Stephen.”
“I think all the boys are really excited to be here,” Castagne said. “This is a dream for them, they all hope to get soccer scholarships or try out for pro teams.”
The Development Squad spends six weeks together living, eating and training with the USL League One and League Two teams while playing in six reserve matches versus other teams in the Deep South Division. The development players also have the opportunity to sub on for Tormenta 2 regular season play.
These young men have an opportunity to grow and hone their skills that most players at their age do not receive.Outside of the pitch and training grounds, the Development Squad players live in the same complex on Georgia Southern’s campus as the League Two players. Allowing the two teams to intermingle and create memories truly helps build a memory to last a lifetime for these young players. |
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 27, 2019
Tormenta 2 Takes Down Rivals SC United Bantams on the Road 3-0 After an entertaining match, Tormenta FC 2 won against the SC United Bantams on the road 3-0. Following the excitement of scoring the game-winning goal on Sunday from sixty yards out, Austrian forward Luca Mayr continued to shine as he scored a brace tonight. Christian Lue Young scored the third goal of the match and his first of the season.
Mayr scored the team’s first goal with only 20 minutes on the clock off of a corner kick from Adrian Billhardt. His second goal was accomplished during the second half around the 57th minute from inside the box. Soon after, Lue Young scored in the 69th minute, solidifying the team’s victory. Through all 90 minutes, Tormenta 2 was the clearly dominant side. The Bantams never had the chance to capitalize on their minimal opportunities, thanks to a strong defensive effort from Tormenta’s backline.
This game brings Tormenta FC 2 only 2 points behind SC United with a match in hand as the season starts to wind down. Tormenta 2 will now face Peachtree City MOBA at home this Saturday at 8 pm in Erk Russell Park.

Tormenta Defeats Richmond Kickers 1-0
Moves to Top of Standings
Tormenta FC defeated the Richmond Kickers tonight 1-0 and continued its undefeated home streak. This win, combined with Forward Madison FC’s defeat of North Texas SC tonight, put Tormenta back on top of the standings with twenty-five points.
“Richmond was playing really well tonight, keeping the ball off of us, but we finally got a chance and we took it,” Tormenta head coach John Miglarese said. “We got the three points, and now it’s time to move on to the next one.”
The majority of the match was back and forth with both defenses playing strong. Tormenta FC had its first chance in the 43rd minute when Alex Morrell shot just left of the goal.
In the 83rd, Tormenta’s Marco Micaletto wins a penalty kick which he converts into the game-winning goal. Richmond was forced to finish off the game with only ten men as Conor Shanosky received a red card in the 87th.
“It was vital that we stay strong and defend the home turf this week,” Man of the Match Joshua Phelps said. “We’ve got an off week coming up, and I’ve got to give it up to the boys for getting our job done before getting some rest this week.”
Tormenta FC finishes their three-game home run on July 6 against Forward Madison FC. The two teams’ first meeting on May 18 resulted in a 1-0 win for Tormenta. Forward Madison beat North Texas SC tonight 3-1, bringing them up to seventh place in the League One standings with fourteen points.

Tormenta Tales with Drew Fellios
ESPN’s Fellios Will Uncover Untold Tormenta Tales in Exclusive Web Series
Today, Tormenta FC introduced “Tormenta Tales with Drew Fellios”, an exclusive web series written by ESPN’s Drew Fellios who will uncover Tormenta stories that might otherwise go unnoticed. The series will run throughout the season and can be found on www.tormentafc.com.
Drew’s first spotlight story focuses on Netra Van Tassell, co-owner of Tormenta FC. Inside the club, Netra is a woman who has many titles, the most prominent one being “Mama Netra.” This story and the ones following will give Tormenta Nation a fresh outside look into the club like never before.
ESPN’s Drew Fellios has been the voice of Tormenta TV since the club’s inaugural season in 2016. Fellios started with ESPN in 2012 as a play-by-play commentator for college football and basketball. He has since become the main commentator for the Pop Warner Super Bowl and the International Champions Cup, along with ESPN Wide World of Sports at the Walt Disney World Resort and the Little League World Series. Fellios also commentates for USL Championship-side Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Sitting second in the USL League One standings, Tormenta FC will play the Richmond Kickers this Saturday, June 22 at 8 pm in Erk Russell Park. The teams’ first meeting on April 6 resulted in a 0-0 draw, but Tormenta looks to take home all three points this time.

Tormenta Looks To Add To Richmonds Current Struggles
Tormenta Looks To Add To Richmond’s Current Struggles
After a second-half domination leading to a 2-0 win over Orlando City B, Tormenta FC (6-1-4) returns to Erk Russell Park on Saturday to take on the Richmond Kickers (3-6-3). Earlier in the season, Richmond was the first team that the Ibises dropped points to this campaign. Both teams were evenly matched over the span of the 90 minutes but both failed to capitalize and the match ended 0-0. This time around, the two teams are on separate paths leading to this match. Richmond comes in having not scored since May 22nd. The Kickers are 0-4-1 in their last five and are 1-3-1 on the road. Tormenta, on the other hand, comes in riding a 62-day undefeated streak, have not been scored on in 414 minutes of play (36th minute versus Toronto FC II on May 12th), and are still undefeated at home since 2017.
Tormenta will look to build on the positive result gained versus Orlando City and continue applying pressure to first place, North Texas SC.
What To Watch For:
Top Two Keepers In The League: We have spent all season praising Pablo Jara for his impressive form. 7 clean sheets through 11 matches is a stat that any club, at any level would love to have. Saturday’s match will pit Jara versus Richmond’s Akira Fitzgerald, arguably the second best keeper in League One. Through twelve matches, Fitzgerald has 5 clean sheets of his own. When the Kicker’s keeper shuts out his opponents, his team wins 60% of the time. Over the course of their five-game slide, Fitzgerald only has one clean sheet to his name. To stop the losing slide, Fitzgerald will have to get help from the other ten men on the pitch. He is a great keeper but it takes a full team effort to get three points.
Tormenta’s Defense: Throughout the season, Tormenta has been relying on their strong backline to stifle their opponent’s attack. Through 11 matches, the boys in blue and magenta have only allowed 7 goals (T1st with Greenville). A strong defense is something that can easily cause fits for a team like Richmond who has scored the second least goals up to this point (11). On top of being bottom of the league in goals scored, the Kickers haven’t found the back of the net in 280 minutes. Expect Tormenta’s defense to frustrate Richmond offensive players like Joe Gallardo, Dennis Chin, and Mutaya Mwape.
The Effectiveness of Charlie Dennis: Charlie Dennis has served Tormenta in several different roles this season. We have seen Dennis starting at striker, right wing, left wing, and left mid. Dennis has truly found his groove assisting the attack as a #7 or #9. Dennis leads the league in chances created (26) and is second in the league in crosses (46). Expect Charlie to apply pressure on Richmond’s backline by setting up his teammates or sending in pinpoint crosses throughout the match.

Tormenta 2 Ties With Charlotte on the Road 3-3
English Forward JJ Donnelly Scores Hat-Trick
After a back and forth match, Tormenta FC 2 tied with Charlotte Eagles 3-3 tonight on the road, just two days after defeating Discoveries SC 1-0. English Forward JJ Donnelly scored all three goals, Tormenta 2’s first hat-trick of the season.
Tormenta 2 scored first in the 38th with a beautiful shot by Donnelly, assisted by Luca Mayr, but Charlotte stole the lead not long after with two shocking goals just before halftime.
Trailing into the second half, Tormenta 2 tied things up in the 46th and eventually took back the lead from the home team in the 61st. Unfortunately, Charlotte scored a third goal in the 90th minute and both teams went home with one point.
Notably, Fortia Munts made his first Tormenta 2 appearance in the 72nd minute after an injury late in his college season at Virginia Commonwealth University.
This tie keeps Tormenta second in the League Two standings with 17 points. Tormenta 2 continues to lead the league in goal differential, though, with a difference of 14. The team now travels once again on Sunday, June 23 to play Dalton Red Wolves

Tormenta FC Shuts Out Orlando City B 2-0
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 15, 2019

Tormenta FC Shuts Out Orlando City B 2-0
Tormenta FC battled Orlando City B tonight for the second time this season and came out with all three points this time after tying with OCB on April 14. Tormenta shut out OCB and continued its undefeated home campaign.
“I’m glad we got the result,” Head Coach John Miglarese said. “We were a little rusty in the first half after having a week off, but we got sharper in the second. There were some guys that had to step it up tonight like Mikie Rowe, and I’m very proud of their hard work.”
Orlando City matched Tormenta’s possession throughout but completed only six shots to the home team’s sixteen. Tormenta FC has several close chances in the first half like Dalton Pando’s shot that hit the underside of the crossbar in the 27th, but it was Mikie Rowe who scored the game winner. With his family from Ireland sitting in the stands, Rowe bicycle kicked the ball to the center of the goal after a Tormenta corner in the 54th, putting Tormenta in the lead.
Alex Morrell solidified Tormenta’s lead in the 86th with a goal from the right of the box, assisted by Yaw Amankwa. This win strengthened Tormenta’s second place spot, putting the team within one point of first place in the USL League One standings with twenty-two points, right behind North Texas SC. Tormenta continues its home streak on June 22 against the Richmond Kickers.

Tormenta Looks To Continue Undefeated Streak Versus Orlando City B
Tormenta Looks To Continue Undefeated Streak Versus Orlando City B
Statesboro, GA- Think back to April 14th. Tormenta was sitting at seven points through three games. Fresh off the inaugural win, a second-half domination of FC Tucson and a hard-fought match versus Richmond, Tormenta traveled to Montverde, Florida to face a struggling Orlando City B. The Lions came into the match with a -4 goal differential and two red cards in just two matches. The match that should have been an easy three points for Tormenta was everything but that. The two squads battled back and forth until Ates Diouf for Orlando City B broke the deadlock and shocked the boys in blue and magenta. Tormenta trailed until the 94th minute when Lars Eckenrode brought the match back to a draw with a header following a set piece. The point gained from this match was Orlando City’s only point through the first 5 weeks of play. This match is still a tough pill to swallow for Tormenta fans for multiple reasons. The first being they know what their boys are capable of and the 90 minutes in Orlando were a headscratcher, to say the least. On top of that, during the free kick that tied the match up for Tormenta, Lars Eckenrode went down after colliding with two OCB players. The injury that Lars sustained right before the final whistle blew has sidelined the captain up to this point.
But this Saturday, Tormenta will look for all three points at home. This match has the chance to be even more intriguing than the first match between the two squads. Tormenta comes into the match on a five-match unbeaten streak. Up until they fell to FC Tucson on Wednesday, OCB was riding a four-match unbeaten streak of their own. Tormenta still sits semi-comfortably in second place (5-1-4, 19 points) with Toronto FC II one point behind them with a match in hand. Orlando, however, has jumped into the mix of everything in the League One standings (3-6-3, 12 points). The Lions have fought their way just one point behind fifth place. If the Lions win this match on Saturday, the League One standings will be even tighter than it is today. This match pits a team that hasn’t lost at home (Tormenta is 3-0-1 at home) versus a team that hasn’t won on the road (Orlando is 0-2-1 on the road).
What To Watch For:
The Importance Of A Solid Keeper: All season long Pablo Jara has been crucial to Tormenta’s success. Jara still leads the league in clean sheets with 6. Allowing zero goals in 60% of matches played is something that any team in any league would love to have. Orlando City, on the other hand, have conceded the most goals in the league (20) and are second to last in clean sheets with 2. Both of these clean sheets have come from Juliano Chade who has started 8 matches for OCB. To say that OCB has been leaking goals this season would be an understatement, Tormenta’s offense will have to wake up this match if they want all three points.
Tormenta Midfield Missing Gomez: Since Tormenta’s match versus Chattanooga was postponed, Ricardo Gomez will still be missing from Tormenta’s midfield on Saturday. Tormenta will take the field without midfielder Ricardo Gomez. The centermid is second in the team in minutes played this season with 896. Losing Gomez could easily be detrimental for Tormenta due to the fact that Ricardo leads the team in passes completed with 659 (2nd in the league). Throughout the season, Ricardo has been crucial to Tormenta starting their attacks successfully in the midfield. Without Gomez, Tormenta will have to readjust their starting XI in someway. We could see Pete Pearson step in or Conner Antley who has been very comfortable offensively this season. Antley also spent time in the midfield during college, Tormenta has several options.
Orlando’s Climb Into The Playoff Mix: Through their first seven matches played, OCB’s only points came against Tormenta and Chattanooga. They sat at the bottom of the table with a -10 goal differential. Nothing seemed to be working for the Lions but since that point, they have been on a massive turnaround. The team appears to have found their ideal starting XI that can score goals and get results. Since their 4-1 loss to 1st place North Texas SC on May 11th, OCB has only lost once. Three wins against teams that were higher than them on the table describes how they have played over the last month. Anyone who thinks that this match will be a cakewalk for Tormenta has not watched much League One play in the last month.

Match Preview: Tormenta FC Looks To Avenge Lone Loss Of The Season
Match Preview: Tormenta FC Hopes To Avenge Lone Loss Of The Season
Returns Home To Face the Chattanooga Red Wolves
Statesboro, Ga– A team’s home field is supposed to be a fortress. A place that other teams go into and worry how many points they’ll walk out with. That is exactly what Erk Russell Park has been for the last two years. Tormenta did not drop a point at home since the 2017 season. That changed two weeks ago when Lansing came to town and the two teams fought to a scoreless draw. 737 days of securing three points at home came to an end in 90 frustrating minutes.
As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and the League One boys will look to restart that streak this Saturday versus Chattanooga. When the two teams met at David Stanton Field in April, the Red Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the 17th minute. Tormenta dominated possession in the match with 61% and 13 shots. It took until the 74th minute for USL League One Player of the Month, Conner Antley, to respond for Tormenta. The boys kept pushing and got one back via Chris Hellmann in the 88th minute but it ended up being too little too late, and Tormenta fell 3-2 that day.
Tormenta (5-1-4) comes into this match sitting second in the league at 19 points while Chattanooga (3-4-3) sit in sixth with 12 points. The teams are polar opposites with Tormenta only dropping one point at home and Chattanooga only picking up one point on the road this season.
What (and Who) To Watch For:
Pablo Jara: So far this season Jara has been a brick wall in-goal for Tormenta. The Chilean keeper has received Save of the Week honors three times and Team of the Week once. Pablo leads the league in clean sheets with six and has stood on his head several times this season to keep his squad in matches. Since that tough loss to Chattanooga, Jara has 4 clean sheets which have been crucial to Tormenta receiving points in every match since the loss.
Red Wolves’ Road Woes: As touched on earlier, Chattanooga has struggled on the road this season to say the least. The Red Wolves have been outscored 9 to 2 in road games, and their only point came from a 0-0 draw with Orlando City B. Chattanooga comes into this match with the worst road record in USL League One. Facing a team that has dropped points at home just once in two years will be a big challenge for the Red Wolves.
Tormenta Midfield Missing Gomez: For the first time this season, Tormenta will take the field without midfielder Ricardo Gomez. In the last match versus Greenville, Gomez picked up two yellow cards which led to his one-match suspension. Losing Gomez could easily be detrimental for Tormenta due to the fact that Ricardo leads the team in passes completed with 659 (2nd in the league). Throughout the season, Ricardo has been crucial to Tormenta starting their attacks successfully in the midfield. Look for either Pete Pearson or Dalton Pando to step up and fill the spot.
