Delinda Gaskins, Bulloch NAACP President
Speech made at the NAACP’s 2022 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in Statesboro, Georgia
We have a duty as citizens; we have a duty as children of God to make sure we execute the rights we were given by God. We have certain rights that we just ought to be able to do, and one of those rights we were given in America is to vote.
We have the right to vote. We need to execute the right to vote in every single election that we have. Currently, in Bulloch County, we don’t see many variants; we don’t see the sort of voter suppression that we think of, but it’s going to be very important for us to begin to really think about our voting rights.
Do we really have the voting rights that we’re supposed to have? Voting rights include knowing what’s going on. If we don’t know what’s going on, we have no idea what to vote for and why we’re voting.
So as citizens and residents of Bulloch County, we have our Mayor, our Board of Education, and the County Commission that have all opened the door to ask them questions and come to their meetings, and it’s up to us to do that.
We must attend these meetings because if we don’t know what’s going on, we have no idea what to vote for and why we’re voting. So please take it upon yourself to use 2022 to allow us to fight forward for the rights we so deserve.
Whether it’s housing, education, or our economy, we must stand strong and firm. If we don’t do it now, we’re going to owe the generations behind us an apology, and I don’t want to owe them not one singular apology for not doing what I can do now to make sure they have what they need in the future.
So please, I beg of you Bulloch County and those who are visiting, take it upon yourself to stand tall in 2022, fight forward for our rights, and do the things that we need to do.
Please join us in this year of valid fighting for our rights, and we’ll see you on the battlefield.
